Chelsea host Sevilla in the 1st round of the new Champions League campaign at Stamford Bridge (London) on Tuesday, October 20 and the game kicks off at 8pm (UK).

Julen Lopetegui’s Sevilla visits a reinforced Chelsea on the first match-day of Group E of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League. The last two UEFA Europa League champions meet in this great opener in Group E. Chelsea is one of the teams that has best strengthened in this summer market (Havertz, Werner, Thiago Silva …) ,while Sevilla does not stop growing under the orders of Julen Lopetegui. Chelsea just barely scraped through their Champions League group last season, and were taken apart at the round-of-16 stage by eventual winners Bayern Munich. They can expect no favours here from the dangerous Sevilla as we are expecting an entertaining clash in London.

After a summer of heavy spending, Frank Lampard’s side have endured a somewhat inconsistent start to the new season, dropping points to the likes of Liverpool and West Brom, while also exiting the EFL Cup on penalties against Tottenham. Star players like Kai Havertz and Timo Werner are yet to truly excel, but you get the feeling it is only a matter of time, given their immense quality. A Champions League tie against Sevilla is a great time to do just that for Chelsea’s new signings. Fourth in the Premier League in 2019/20, this is Chelsea’s 17th adventure in the UEFA Champions League group stage, the third in four years. The exception occurred in that 2018/19 campaign, when the Blues lifted the UEFA Europa League cup with Maurizio Sarri at the helm.
Sevilla have won just one of their seven away major UEFA European matches in England (D3 L3), a 2-1 win at Old Trafford in March 2018. All seven of their away games have been against different teams – Bolton, Tottenham, Arsenal, Man City, Leicester, Liverpool and Man Utd.The Spanish side have made a strong start to the new La Liga season , including a 1-1 draw with Barcelona, and are still riding high after winning the finals of the Europa League against Inter Milan back in August, which was their sixth Europa League title since 2006. Besides Chelsea, with Krasnodar and Rennes also in Group E, Sevilla will fancy their chances of reaching the knockouts and taking a break from Europa League domination.

CONCLUSION
This will be the first ever European encounter between Chelsea and Sevilla. Chelsea have won just one of their last nine UEFA Champions League matches against Spanish opponents (D5 L3), which was a 2-1 win against Atlético Madrid in September 2017.
Even though Sevilla doesn't have a decent record when visiting the English shore, they have won each of their last three major UEFA European matches against English teams, beating Manchester United in March 2018 in the Champions League last 16, Wolves in August 2020 in the Europa League quarter-final and Man Utd again also in August 2020 in the Europa League semi-final.
Chelsea have lost their last two UEFA Champions League matches – the Blues have never lost three games on the trot in a major UEFA European competition.
