Newcastle vs Blackburn Rovers - Match Preview

Newcastle United have been drawn at home against Blackburn Rovers in the second round of the Carabao Cup. The game will go ahead on Tuesday, 15 September at St. James Park and the match will kick off at 7.30pm (UK).

Newcastle VS Blackburn Rovers - Betting Preview

The initial reaction to the draw for Newcastle was that it could have been worse. Last season they were drawn against Leicester, the highest-ranked Northern club and were knocked out straight away. In getting Blackburn, they avoided teams such as Everton, Wolves or Leeds. It's at St. James Park and the only downside to it is that the fans won't be there to see the game.

Blackburn will see that as their chance to go through to Round 3 where the potential opponents will be either Morecambe or Oldham Athletic. Blackburn will also take solace in the fact that Newcastle haven't progressed beyond the third round in recent years and have not had much success in it lately. Blackburn are a decent side under Tony Mowbray and might put up more fight than the Toon fans expect.

NEWCASTLE VS BLACKBURN MATCH ANALYSIS

As uncertainty surrounding the club takeover has been around for years, the priorities at St. James Park have drifted away from silverware to staying up in the Premier League at all costs. The recent results in all cups suggest that those games are just distractions from their main concern. Add the tight schedule at the beginning of the season and it seems likely that Steve Bruce may not field the strongest possible team.

Having said that the Magpies did have a solid 19/20 season when everybody expected them to struggle and fight for survival. Manager Steve Bruce had limited funds, but his team performed remarkably well throughout the campaign. They are a favorite here for sure, but in knock-out games you can never tell.

Tony Mowbray's side are in a bit of a financial difficulty at the beginning of the new season, and by not being able to attract a replacement for sponsorship, they have further aggravated that situation. They have solved a goalkeeper issue by signing Thomas Kaminski from Gent, but they still need a back-up keeper. They still need to find a defensive partner for Darragh Lenihan and a new centre-forward as well.

On the pitch, Rovers were forced to come from behind in their first round match against Doncaster Rovers (3:2), with goals from Lewis Holtby, Joe Rankin-Costello and Adam Armstrong earning qualification to the next round. Against Newcastle Tony Mowbray will probably give chance to some young prospects from their famed academy as they still look to buy more players to fit into Mowbray's 4-3-3.

Newcastle VS Blackburn Rovers BETTING TIPS

The last time these two sides faced each other was in the FA Cup, with Newcastle running out 4-2 winners in a third round replay. As for the League Cup, we will have to go nine years back when Gael Givet's dramatic late goal earned Rovers a 4-3 victory at Ewood Park.

Blackburn Rovers have a better head-to-head record with 9 wins to 6 in their last 19 matches, but the Toon's boss has an upper hand over visiting manager, although by a really small margin (4-3).
