Aston Villa host Newcastle at the Villa Park (Birmingham) in the 2nd Round of the 2021/22 Premier League season and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Saturday, August 21. Read our reasons for Aston Villa vs Newcastle prediction and betting tips.
VILLANS AND MAGPIES LOOK TO MAKE AMENDS FOR A POOR START
All eyes would fixate on the departure of Jack Grealish, who left for Man City for a British-record fee. However, a number of excellent additions have been made to replace the England international. Danny Ings, Emiliano Buendia, Ashley Young and Leon Bailey were all given debuts by Dean Smith in last weekend’s game against Watford. Ings got off the mark for his new team, but he couldn’t help them suffer a defeat on the opening day of the campaign. Newcastle were also involved in a thrilling fixture on the opening day of the season, as they were beaten 4-2 by West Ham United. The Toon went ahead twice in the game, only for a second-half fightback from the Hammers to turn the tables around. Callum Wilson scored on the opening day of the season for the second year running for Steve Bruce’s side, and much of their chances of success this season will likely hinge on keeping the striker fit.
SUBS OFFER VILLA SOURCE OF LIGHT
In the absence of the injured Ollie Watkins after he failed a late fitness test, Smith’s side looked disjointed in attack at the Vicarage Road, but it was perhaps more surprising to see how they struggled to contain Sarr with the same personnel in a defence that was such a strong point last season. Dean smith’s men lacked intensity - it was almost like they were playing a friendly game in the first half - and gave themselves a real mountain to climb.
Leaving the Grealish era behind was never likely to be easy for Villa and the disappointing performance against the newly promoted Watford was exactly what Smith didn’t need. But after all three substitutes, including the new £30m signing Leon Bailey, made a real impact in the second half their manager could at least find some positives. The Villans are eager to record their first win of the season, and they are likely to fight tooth and nail against Newcastle.
NEWCASTLE ENGINE ROOM NEEDS AN OVERHAUL
Newcastle’s second-half surrender following a spirited start suggested the coming months could be a bit of a grim slog for Steve Bruce’s side. As Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek exerted control over midfield, Steve Bruce must have rued Newcastle’s failure to register Joe Willock’s £22m move from Arsenal in time for the new boy, who made a habit of scoring important late goals from the bench during a loan stint last spring, to be involved.
Willock and his game-changing skills were badly needed as his new side ran out of ideas and energy. Moreover, West Ham’s ruthless counterattacking ability will surely have convinced Bruce of the need to sign another, more defensive-minded midfielder before the transfer window ends. A semi-fit Jonjo Shelvey is no midfield enforcer and, without added steel in this department, Bruce’s side will struggle.

It was a really disappointing weekend for both sides last time out, and they will both be hopeful of being stronger defensively this weekend. Aston Villa are unbeaten in their last six Premier League matches against the Magpies (W2, D4) since losing 1-0 back in February 2015, and are our pick to get the three points here, as they look to put a show on in front of their fans for the first time this season. Also, expect Danny Ings to hit the back of the net on his home debut.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
