Austria host Scotland at the Ernst Happel Stadion (Vienna) in the World Cup Qualifications and the match kicks off at 7.45 pm (UK) on Tuesday, September 7. Read our reason for Austria vs Scotland prediction and betting tips.
BATTLE FOR THE 2ND PLACE IS HEATING UP
After Austria’s 5-2 defeat against Israel on Saturday, they’ve slumped to fourth in Group F and will see this match in Vienna as a must-win. That defeat did see Austria score at least two goals for the fourth time this WCQ campaign though, and a quick attacking start could be beneficial in this clash as since Franco Foda took charge nearly four years ago, 71% of Austria’s games have seen the team that scored first go on to win. Meanwhile, with the fight for a second place looking like it could go down to the wire, Scotland will be battling hard for a result too. A 1-0 win over bottom side Moldova on Saturday was a poor scoreline considering goal-difference may be a tiebreaker, but it did at least end Scotland’s four-game winless run (D1, L3), and will give them hope that they can continue a four-game unbeaten streak vs Austria in competitive action (W1, D3).
A MUST-WIN GAME FOR ’DAS TEAM’
Austria is 4th In the standings in Group F with seven points from five matches played, three points behind a playoff spot. In their first September qualifier, they won 2-0 against Moldova but were outplayed 5-2 by Israel at the weekend. The home side was magnificent in the first half - in the 33rd minute it was already 3-0. Austria managed to get back in the game, scoring two goals until the 55th minute, but Israel put into another gear and secured a win with two more goals to leave the Austrians empty-handed.
Das Team played well at EURO 2020, where they were eliminated in the 1/8 final against Italy. However, they allowed twelve goals already in the World Cup Qualifications, so they have to improve in that segment if they want to qualify for Qatar. Luckily for them, their next opponent, Scotland, have been struggling for goals as of late. Austria at home should play better and will hope to bounce back from the thrashing they received on Saturday.
SCOTLAND CAN’T AFFORD ANOTHER NIGHT OF SQUANDERED CHANCES
The win against the group's bottom side, and one ranked 175th in the world, at least turned the tide after a 2-0 away defeat to leaders Denmark in midweek. Lyndon Dykes scored early but Scotland squandered their chances in a 1-0 win against lowly Moldova. An unmarked Kieran Tierney then missed a sitter from a corner in the 26th, Andy Robertson fired over the bar three minutes later and Ryan Christie blasted high with three minutes remaining. The three points left Scotland third after Israel beat Austria.
At the World Cup qualification, they still have a solid chance to qualify for the playoff though. The biggest problem for Steve Clarke's side is the lack of goals from the attacking line, as they have scored only eight goals so far. On the other hand, their defence is looking great. If they can score first this time around it would stand them in good stead - the Scots are unbeaten within 90 minutes in the last ten internationals in which they netted first (W7, D3).

Clarke had wanted an improved performance as well as the three points against the group's bottom side but said he would settle for the first win in five outings. In the end, he got the latter and half a performance, However, they have given themselves a fighting chance of finishing runners-up behind a Denmark side who now appear out of sight, five points clear at the top. The same goes for the hosts, whose defeat did see them score at least two goals for the fourth time this World Cup Qualification campaign. It will be a tight, nervy contest and the BettingKick’s Austria vs Scotland prediction is: Under 2.5 goals

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
