Betis host Celtic at Estadio Benito Villamarín (Sevilla) in the 1st round of the Europa League group stage and the match kicks off at 5.45 pm (UK) on Thursday, September 16. Read our reasons for Betis vs Celtic prediction and betting tips.
EXPECT A CAGEY AFFAIR IN THE BENITO VILLAMARIN
A solid fifth-place finish in La Liga last season earned Real Betis a spot in this campaign’s Europa League, and they come into this opening game looking to protect an impressive UEL group stage record. They’ve only lost one of their 12 previous group stage matches in the competition (W5, D6), keeping a standout eight clean sheets in that time. Although their domestic results have been a little underwhelming, they’ll still be favourites to progress into the knockout phase, especially if they start with a win here. As for Celtic, the former European champions’ recent UEL record should ease concerns, because although they suffered a defeat in their most recent UEL match, that was their first loss across their last five competition games (W4). The Glasgow side can also impressively score in a 15th straight UEL clash if they breach the Betis goal here.
PELLEGRINI BLASTS LA LIGA FIXTURE SCHEDULING
Manuel Pellegrini's men are rounding into form following a mediocre start to the season, with just two points from their opening three games, after draws with Mallorca and Cadiz. But the Andalusia side put in a good display despite losing 1-0 to Real Madrid, before gaining a fully deserved three points against Granada on Monday night. They also thumped Roma 5-2 in pre-season and will be a huge test for Ange Postecoglou’s new look Celtic side.
Betis also started last season’s La Liga on the back foot, after winning only their opening two league games and were bottom of the table after 11 games, so Pellegrini will not read too much into it. The bigger problem for Betis though is a short turnaround for the home side (played three days before this fixture), which makes a lower-scoring affair more likely. Nonetheless, Betis is still expected to make good on the clear gulf in quality between the teams.
CELTIC KICK OFF THEIR UEL CAMPAIGN WITH A SENTIMENTAL TRIP ABROAD
The Hoops head back to Seville where their European dream ended with a defeat to Porto in the UEFA Cup Final in 2003. This new Celts side have undergone a summer of transition on and off the pitch and come here off the back of a 3-0 win over Ross County at the weekend. However, their previous two games against Rangers and AZ Alkmaar (both defeats) show that they could be short of the required level to test Real Betis on the road.
It will be a difficult start to Group G, especially with no away fans allowed in the Benito Villamarin, and with the Scottish giants missing four players in total with Greg Taylor, Christopher Jullien, James Forrest and Kyogo Furuhashi, the task at hand in Andalusia will be even tougher. Celtic did not travel well in Europe last season, conceding four goals in each of their last two away matches in the competition. Ange Postecoglou's could struggle to get out of their group and this will prove a real test.

Celtic's early-season star, Kyogo Furuhashi, misses the trip, a severe blow for the Hoops considering the attacking output he has provided so far, and his absence will be evident in terms of chance creation for Celtic. Additionally, Betis will be hard to break down, already proving to be a defensive force in what has been a quiet start to the La Liga season. As a result, this match-up might feature fewer goals than you would usually expect from a Celtic side usually intent on an attacking style.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
