CAN ’BLUES’ END A WINLESS RUN AGAINST DERBY AT HOME?
Championship football returns after the international break with a clash between the ever-improving Birmingham and Wayne Rooney’s Derby, a matchup the visitors have enjoyed at St. Andrews over the last eight seasons (W5, D3). Whilst Birmingham have lost just once so far in the league (W2, D2, L1), consistency has been an issue with each of their five games seeing a different result to the prior match. Meanwhile, Derby have surpassed everyone’s expectations with a dogged start to the Championship season (W1, D3, L1), but these are still worrying times for them. The ‘Rams’ began the season with a paper-thin squad and a transfer embargo hanging over their collective heads, though through sheer grit and some shrewd free agents, they may yet defy their status as one of the pre-season favourites for the drop.
BOYER’S MEN FIRM FAVOURITES AT ST. ANDREW’S
The Blues have carried on where they left off last season at the beginning of the campaign, playing some exciting, attacking football and remaining very dangerous from crosses and set pieces. Two wins, two draws, and one loss from the opening five represents a solid beginning, just one point outside the play-off places - eighth in the table with eight points.
Nonetheless, Lee Bowyer and his charges will be hoping to go one better than the 1-1 draw they managed at Barnsley before the break and climb up the table. Bowyer’s men are firm favourites under the lights on Friday, Derby’s financial problems off the pitch hugely restricted them this summer and with Troy Deeney’s arrival bolstering the hosts’ ranks it will be an excitable home faithful roaring the Blues on.
DERBY CAN LEAPFROG THE HOSTS WITH A WIN
Don’t expect an overly exciting affair when Rooney’s men take to the field as they have averaged a joint league-low 1.6 total goals per match so far, whilst a league-high four games produced under 2.5 goals in total. To their credit, they have been reasonably tough to break down, but the fact remains that Derby have failed to win 11 of their last 12 league games (W1, D4, L7).
The Rams have also lost just once so far, although they only have one win to their name and three draws, leaving them 15th in the table on six points, meaning they will leapfrog the home team with a victory on Friday night. A slide down the table seems inevitable at some point for the Rams, however, Rooney will be desperate to carry on their positive start against the physical threat of Birmingham.

Birmingham are winless in their last four home league games (D2 L2), failing to score in any of their last three at St Andrew’s. However, the Blues will be galvanized by the arrival of Troy Deeney, a boyhood Blues fan, at St Andrew’s following his 11-year spell at Watford. The 33-year-old has certainly been prolific during his time in the Championship in the past, bagging 84 goals in 224 appearances, including seven goals for the Hornets last season from just 19 appearances. Although the Rams are unbeaten in eight in Birmingham, whether Deeney plays or not, we feel that the Blues’ victory here is long overdue.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
