Cagliari will try to start the new season on a high note after saving themselves from relegation in the last rounds of the previous term. Spezia changed coach, but the goal is the same, avoid relegation to Serie B at any cost. Read our Cagliari vs Spezia prediction and betting tips.
Leonardo Semplici was Cagliari's savior in the last season. When he changed Eusebio Di Francesco at Sardinians bench just a few had positive thoughts about their battle to avoid relegation. Cagliari finished the season in exceptional form and Semplici found a way to put the spark in the player's eyes and got a maximum from them in the last rounds. The ex-SPAL coach did a tremendous job and he also got more than deserved multi-year contract just one season after he got relegated with SPAL.
Cagliari still has a good roster but they are going through some tough times with their most quality players. They were unable to agree with Radja Nainggolan who left for Antwerp and speculations around Nahitan Nandez suggest he is close to transfer, Inter and Atalanta are looking forward to getting him until the end of August. Without them, Cagliari could have some problems in the midfield, but looking at the rest of the squad they have the individual quality to stay in Serie A. Goalkeeper Cragno is one of the best in Italy, Joao Pedro is one of the most underrated players in the league, Godin, Strootman, Marin, Pereiro, Pavoletti, they all have something to prove in the next season.
Cagliari: Cragno; Ceppitelli, Godin, Carboni; Zappa, Marin, Strootman, Dalbert; Pedro, Pereiro; Pavoletti.
After an impressive last season in which Spezia played great football and achieved their goal of staying in Serie A, their coach Vinzenco Italiano moved to Fiorentina. Former Inter and Italy midfielder Thiago Motta was handed the reins at Spezia despite a lack of managerial experience. In charge for a short spell of 10 games at Genoa two years ago, the former Paris Saint-Germain youth coach will be targeting survival but with a much harder task than Italiano had. Spezia was the underdog in every match last term, now their rivals are well aware of what they are capable to do on the pitch, despite their small budget. Thiago Motta had a tremendous career but his first coaching steps are adventurous. He has some interesting ideas, regarding man management and tactics, changing formations through the game, so we are watching Spezia with curiosity.
There are few question marks regarding their results in the new season because they lost many players from the last season that were on loan. Also, they played just one game because their preseason friendlies were canceled due to some coronavirus cases. The probably best player M'Bala Nzola is not in manager plans for the new season for many reasons. One of them, the club needs money from his transfer, eventually to Premier League or Ligue 1 teams. The aim is to bring some players on loan to give Motta a bigger roster. Spezia played well in Coppa Italia's 3-1 win against Pordenone last week but their rivals are far from the Serie A level. Two players on loan from Atalanta, Kovalenko, and Colley should start, but Spezia will need big Daniele Verde season to stay in this league.
Spezia: Zoet; Hristov, Nikolau, Erlic; Amian, Kovalenko, Maggiore, Bastoni; Verde, Mraz, Colley

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
