Cardiff host Bristol at the Cardiff City Stadium in the 5th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 12.30 pm (UK) on Saturday, August 28. Read our reason for Cardiff vs Bristol prediction and betting tips.
CARDIFF VS BRISTOL: STATS & FACTS
This is the 100th meeting between Cardiff and Bristol in all competitions and the away side has won each of the last four league meetings between them. Cardiff maintained their unbeaten start with a 3-1 victory over Millwall last round, in a game that saw all four goals arrive after the 65th minute. In fact, all 12 goals seen in their Championship games so far have arrived after half-time! Another remarkable stat is that all eight of the ‘Bluebirds’ league goals have come from headers, an aerial threat which Bristol will have to cope with. It has been a turbulent start for Bristol with just one league win and a demoralizing cup defeat highlighting their plight. In fact, the ‘Robins’ have won just three league games under Nigel Pearson (D4, L11) and the misery could continue as he has a mere 25% win-rate in personal H2Hs with Cardiff!
CARDIFF VS BRISTOL: PRE-MATCH TALK
The Bluebirds have been producing fine displays at the start of the season, with the team climbing to the playoffs berth thanks to a 3-1 win over Millwall, where centre-back Aden Flint scored two goals in four second-half minutes to extend Cardiff’s unbeaten start to the season in the league to 10 games. This is now Cardiff’s best four-game start to a league season since their last promotion (2017/18) when they went six unbeaten to start the campaign. Avoiding a reversal here would see them match an 11-game run from January-March.
As for Bristol, the sole victory this league campaign did come in their last road trip, which in turn halted a six-game winless away run. They were left to rue a litany of missed chances against Swansea (0-1) as they also remain winless at home since January. Their defensive frailties are clear to see though, as Bristol have conceded 2+ goals in each of their last five competitive away games while they haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last seven, meaning they may need to score twice to get something from this game.
CARDIFF VS BRISTOL: TEAM NEWS
Cardiff made eight changes for their second-round Carabao Cup clash against Brighton (0-2) with Sam Bowen and Tavio D'Almeida handed competitive debuts. To make matters worse the captain, Sean Morrison, one of three players retained from Saturday, went off with a knee injury. More worryingly for Mick McCarthy, Cardiff could also lose Kieffer Moore, who scored 20 Championship goals for Cardiff last season, amidst interest from Wolves.
On the other hand, thanks to a completely healthy squad available for selection, Bristol manager Nigel Pearson has zero fitness concerns whatsoever ahead of this game, though Cundy, O’Dowda, and Williams have been struggling with injuries of late. Also, attacking midfielder Alex Scott has signed a new four-year contract with the Championship club. Guernsey-born Scott agreed terms on his 18th birthday following an impressive start to his time at Ashton Gate after starting all four of the Robins' Championship fixtures so far this season.

In this game, Bristol should get enough chances to break down this Cardiff side, but that probably won’t quite prevent them from conceding a couple at the other end. We reckon that it will be a tight encounter, but, nonetheless, we’re more inclined to give a slight edge to Cardiff as they are unbeaten in their last 10 league games, while Nigel Pearson has lost five of his seven away matches against Cardiff. It should be an interesting one.
BettingKick’s Cardiff vs Bristol prediction is Cardiff win.
