Promoted Empoli will make Serie A return against a familiar face. Maurizio Sarri makes his official Lazio debut vs club where he first made a coaching impact. Read our Empoli vs Lazio prediction and betting tips.
It was Empoli who won the Serie B title last term, dominating pretty much from start to finish under exciting boss Alessio Dionisi who left for Sassuolo as Roberto De Zerbi’s successor. Aurelio Andreazzoli is also a familiar face as he returned to the club for a third spell at the Stadio Castellani after 2018 and 2019, hoping for better results in Serie A this time. Leonardo Mancuso was their top scorer with 23 goals last term, but he needs some help, so experienced journeyman Patrick Cutrone has been brought in on loan from Wolves. It will not be strange to see some more players from the transfer market until the end of August in Empoli because the attack could be their worst part of the team.
Their even bigger problem is tradition, Empoli was more stable in the elite Italian club competition 20 years ago, but lately, they were regular travelers between Serie A and Serie B. Empoli always had a good academy and provided some fine players for Italian football but on the other end, their lack of funds was always a great burden for their hopes to be in Serie A for a long spell. They always play entertaining football and especially at home ground Empoli will be a very tricky opponent for every team in the league.
Empoli (4-3-2-1): Vicario; Stojanovic, Ismajli, Romagnoli, Marchizza; S Ricci, Stulac, Bandinelli; Bajrami, Haas; Mancuso

Lazio had many problems at the end of the season, transfer ban because of lack of liquidity and they lost a coach that was capable to achieve the knockout phase of the Champions League with an average roster and budget. President Claudio Lotito had to take action himself and inject new capital, reported to be at least €10m. That allowed Lazio to remove the embargo set by the Italian financial authority and sign players who had been training with new coach Maurizio Sarri for several weeks. Felipe Anderson, Pedro, and Raul Moro will give an ex-Juventus and Chelsea coach much-needed depth in the roster.
There should be some huge changes in tactical approach as Simone Inzaghi’s 3-5-1-1 is much different than Sarri’s 4-3-3 and pre-season friendlies have been far from convincing that Lazio is ready for that switch. Lazio also signed Pedro, who moves from Roma for free, in an unusual transfer from city rivals, first in more than 50 years. They are close to signing Toma Basic from Bordeaux, who could help in the midfield as Lucas Leiva is not in his prime years.
Lazio (4-3-3): Strakosha; Lazzari, Luiz Felipe, Acerbi, Hysaj; Milinkovic-Savic, Leiva, Luis Alberto; Felipe Anderson, Immobile, Correa
Suspended: None
Injured: Adekanye, Cataldi

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
