Reigning Serie A champions Inter open up the 2021-22 season at San Siro on Saturday but with a lot of changes after impressive last term. Read our Inter vs Genoa prediction and betting tips.
Inter lost their key figures from the last season and that should be crucial in their fight to defend the title. Lukaku was transferred to Chelsea, coach Conte left the club unsatisfied with the financial crisis and with handling the club by current owners. Suning is still trying to find ways to preserve ownership of the club, but time is ticking away as they must found around 400 million euros in the next year and a half to pay their debts. New coach Simone Inzaghi’s competitive debut on the Inter bench will be hard as he is under injury crisis because Lautaro Martinez is suspended and Alexis Sanchez is injured, so Bosnia and Hercegovina veteran and ex-Roma captain Edin Dzeko should start.
It is unclear how Inter will perform in the new season because the financial situation is like a dark cloud over their heads. They also sold Hakimi to PSG and lack of speed and strength is felt in the current team. Inter is limited in the transfer market, so they couldn’t sign and players for a high amount, trying just to work out some transfers with free footballers. Eriksen is also out of the squad for now and without three players that were an integral part of the winning roster, it is very hard to measure their potential. Simone Inzaghi did some good things with Lazio in the last years but there is a significant difference between playing for the title and playing for the Champions League spot.
Inter (3-5-1-1): Handanovic; Skriniar, De Vrij, Bastoni; Darmian, Barella, Brozovic, Calhanoglu, Perisic; Sensi; Dzeko
Suspended: Lautaro Martinez
Injured: Sanchez, Eriksen, Gagliardini, Lautaro Martinez, Brazao
Genoa has only one aim for the upcoming season, to avoid a relegation battle in Serie A. They had some interesting transfers trying to find more stability at the back and some offensive spark because they sold Shomurodov to Roma. Goalkeeper Sirigu has a lot of experience and should be on a better level than Perrin but they also signed some very valuable players as Mexican defender Vasquez or Hernani from Parma and Ekuban from Trabzonspor. They are still searching for reinforcements because they lost players like Strotman, Pjaca, Zajc, that provided minutes from the bench in the last season. Genoa is trying to find an agreement with Milan for right-back Andrea Conti at the moment and they decided to give up on Bentaleb from Schalke who failed medical.
Genoa got off to the worst possible start in the Italian cup, going 2-0 down at home to Serie B outfit Perugia within 10 minutes to goals from Carretta and Lisi in the first competitive outing of the season. But, they showed some fighting spirit that kept them in the league from in the last term as Domenico Criscito converted a penalty, goalkeeper Leandro Chichizola managed to put the ball into his net for the equalizer before half-time and youngster Yayah Kallon scored the winning goal a few minutes before the end. Genoa will face Salernitana in the next round but Inter game is now in their focus.
Genoa (3-5-2): Sirigu; Vanheusden, Biraschi, Criscito; Sabelli, Sturaro, Badelj, Hernani, Cambiaso; Destro, Ekuban
Suspended: Bani, Behrami
Injured: Cassata

Genoa has lost each of their last six Serie A games against current Italian champions, without scoring and conceding 21 goals in those matches. Inter could be more vulnerable than in the last season and Genoa will try to use that at the premier match. BettingKick’s Inter vs Genoa prediction is: Both teams to score.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
