Leeds host Liverpool at the Elland Road (Leeds) in the 4th round of the 2021/22 Premier League season and the match kicks off at 4.30 pm (UK) on Sunday, September 12. Read our reasons for the Leeds vs Liverpool prediction and betting tips.
LEEDS VS LIVERPOOL: STATS & FACTS
The international break will have been welcomed by Marcelo Bielsa, who saw his team concede first and go winless in their opening three games of the season (D2, L1). Fortunes have been better at home, as Leeds are undefeated in the last seven (W3, D4), their longest such run in the top-flight since 2001. Liverpool may have seen the international break as a chance to calm frustrations after having to settle for a 1-1 draw vs Chelsea. Coming into the weekend though, only Brentford (15) can say they have a longer unbeaten league run than Liverpool's 13 in England's top-four tiers (W10, D3). Away from home, Liverpool have won seven of their last eight EPL matches (D1), five with a clean sheet. They particularly enjoy the 70-mile trip to Elland Road, having lost only once in their last nine league visits here (W5, D3).
LEEDS VS LIVERPOOL: PRE-MATCH TALK
Three games into the Premier League season it’s already clear that it is going to be another action-packed ride at Elland Road, where Leeds are always an attractive prospect. Leeds have rallied bravely since kicking off their campaign with a 5-1 drubbing at Man Utd but need to do more to convince us of their top-half credentials. Everton led twice and created a number of other chances in a 2-2 draw at this venue while it took a late Patrick Bamford leveller to earn a 1-1 stalemate at Burnley. Leeds continue to look fragile at the back, though, and Liverpool have the attacking weapons to take advantage.
Meanwhile, blessed with a relatively easy couple of opening fixtures, Liverpool chalked up a pair of shutout wins over Norwich and Burnley and had everyone believing normal service was resumed at Anfield. Then they were played off the park for 45 minutes by Chelsea and needed a red card to even take a point. The issues that affected Liverpool last season are still there and that makes them vulnerable anywhere, especially against a team as adventurous and confident as Leeds. The teams met twice last term, Liverpool narrowly winning a 7-goal thriller before a tie at Elland Road.
LEEDS VS LIVERPOOL: TEAM NEWS
Marcelo Bielsa has fielded a back three in recent draws with Everton and Burnley but may revert to his usual 4-1-4-1 having dominated possession in the last meeting between these sides in that formation. New signing Dan James could come in for an immediate debut as a replacement for Raphinha after the Brazilian FA banned players from representing the clubs that refused to release them for international duty. Klich's absence will leave Leeds a bit short in midfield and Pascal Struijk may have to move forward as a result. Tyler Roberts and Jamie Shackleton are also pushing for a first start.
On the other hand, Liverpool are optimistic Harvey Elliott will be available on Sunday despite withdrawing from the England U21 squad in midweek. They are less confident about Takumi Minamino's availability, not that he would have started. Diogo Jota looks safe to continue up front in the absence of Roberto Firmino. The latter, along with Fabinho and Alisson, have also been banned to play due to the decision from the Brazilian FA, meaning Caoimhin Kelleher will deputise in goal.
