LITHUANIA VS NORTHERN IRELAND: STATS & FACTS
Lithuania and Northern Ireland are set to battle it out in a low-profile tie with the last meeting between the two sides taking place back in May 1993 in a World Cup qualifier, with Norn Iron winning 1-0 in Vilnius. Both sides are looking to score their first goals in the 2022 World Cup Qualification campaign, and both teams have already lost all realistic hopes of making it to the top two in qualifying Group C despite playing just two games so far. While Lithuania, who have never been at any major tournament, did not enter this specific campaign with any expectations, their rivals had certainly hoped for a better start. However, knowing that Italy and Switzerland hold the top two spots, each with a perfect record so far, it is hard to expect serious changes to Group C standing by the end of the campaign.
LITHUANIA VS NORTHERN IRELAND: PRE-MATCH TALK
Former Hearts boss Valdas Ivanauskas faces a tough task to improve a side who are currently rated 134th in the FIFA Rankings, have lost their last six games including a scudding by Spain's Under 21s side and last won a competitive home qualifier five years ago against Malta. They faced a baptism of fire at the beginning of World Cup qualifying, meeting both Italy and Switzerland in the March window, but have continued to struggle, finishing bottom of the pile at this summer’s Baltic Cup. Lithuania have also only found the back of the net once since November 2020 and a lack of goalscoring prowess has to be a worry for the home side here.
On the other hand, an injury-hit Northern Ireland side travel to the Baltics to face Lithuania desperate to breathe new life into this qualifying campaign. They bounced back from a 2-0 loss in their opening qualifier away to Italy with a 0-0 draw at home to Bulgaria in March and their outings in the summer give plenty of cause for optimism. A comprehensive 3-0 win over Malta was followed by a creditable 1-0 loss to Euro 2020 quarter-finalists Ukraine. Baraclough will be hoping his weakened defence won’t be an issue in this must-win clash and that they can build on those performances.
LITHUANIA VS NORTHERN IRELAND: TEAM NEWS
Ivanauskas has to deal with the loss of his captain, and Lithuania's most-capped player ever, Saulius Mikoliunas to injury. A man to keep an eye on for the home team will be his replacement as skipper Fedor Cernych, who found the net in a 1-1 draw with Warta Poznan at the weekend. Jagiellonia Białystok hitman have scored a respectable nine goals for a nation that don't score much. Also after a break of almost two years, goalkeeper Ernestas Setkus also returns to the national team.
As for Northern Ireland, Manager Ian Baraclough has a major central defensive crisis with Jonny Evans out and his regular international partner Craig Cathcart struggling with a knee injury after limping off for Watford at the weekend. Cardiff City central defender Ciaron Brown has also yet to play this season. It's hardly the ideal preparation for the game in Vilnius – a qualifier that they really need to collect three points if they are serious about having a chance of qualifying for Qatar 2022.

Northern Ireland sit third in World Cup qualifying Group C ahead of this trip to Lithuania, who are bottom of the table and yet to pick up a point. Ian Baraclough’s side will be desperate to take maximum points from this fixture to keep pace with Italy and Switzerland. Despite Northern Ireland injury worries and recent woeful record, they should be too good for the extremely limited Lithuanians.
