LIVERPOOL VS MILAN: STATS & FACTS
Liverpool and AC Milan have only met on two previous occasions in European competition, with both of them coming in the final of the Champions League. The Reds won 3-2 on penalties in 2005, before losing 1-2 in normal time in 2007. Under Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool have only lost one of their 12 group stage games in the CL at Anfield (W9, D2) – 0-2 versus Atalanta last season. The Reds have averaged 2.5 goals per home game in the group stage since the German took charge (30 goals). On the other hand, this will be the first game in the Champions League since March 2014 for the European giants from Milan, after winning only two of their last eight games in Europe (D4 L2), all of which came in the UEFA Europa League last season.
LIVERPOOL VS MILAN: PRE-MATCH TALK
Klopp has rekindled Liverpool’s love affair with Europe’s elite club competition, leading them to 2018 final and then a sixth outright success the following year. A lack of major transfer activity this summer was a slight concern, but getting star defender Virgil van Dijk back from a long-term injury has been a big boost. Up front, Mohamed Salah will be looking to add to his 25 Champions League goals, while Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, and Diogo Jota help Liverpool remain a strong attacking force. Having supporters back at Anfield this term will be the icing on the cake, with the atmosphere always electric for big European nights.
As for Milan, the seven-time CL winners enjoyed a resurgence last season, finishing runners-up in Serie A in their best effort for a decade. Stefano Pioli helped to get the Rossoneri back on track and return to the CL following a seven-year absence. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has lost none of his self-confidence at the age of 39, Olivier Giroud has also been added to the forward line, while wing-back Theo Hernandez and winger Brahim Diaz are younger players to watch out for. The visitors have a neat style of play and should be competitive, but the hosts are still favourites to come on top on Wednesday night.
LIVERPOOL VS MILAN: TEAM NEWS
Harvey Elliott was stretchered off at Leeds on Sunday after sustaining a serious ankle injury and he joins Roberto Firmino and Neco Williams on the sidelines. Jordan Henderson is expected to come in for Elliott in the midfield in what may be Jurgen Klopp's only change from the comfortable 3-0 win at Elland Road against Leeds this weekend.
Meanwhile, Olivier Giroud is in line to return to the AC Milan starting XI after recovering from COVID-19 but faces competition from Zlatan Ibrahimovic for a starting spot after the latter made a scoring return from injury against Lazio. Midfielders Tiemoue Bakayoko and Rade Krunic both miss out, which should pave the way for Franck Kessie to partner Sandro Tonali in the middle of the park once more.

Liverpool put in a good effort to beat Leeds 3-0 on Sunday and the Reds are now unbeaten in the Premier League this season in their four matches, picking up 10 points in the process. Milan are one of three teams to win all three league matches in Serie A this season after their mature display against Lazio on Sunday. They are not to be underestimated as they gear up for their first Champions League game in seven years. This is set to be a close encounter at Anfield, yet with home advantage, Liverpool have the means to sneak all three points and the BettingKick’s Liverpool vs Milan prediction is: Liverpool win
