Newcastle host Southampton at the St. James’ Park (Newcastle) in the 3rd round of the 2021/22 Premier League season and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Saturday, August 28. Read our reasons for Newcastle vs Southampton prediction and betting tips.
SAINTS TO HEAP MORE MISERY ON HOSTS?
Newcastle are one of five teams yet to pick up a point after two Premier League games, but ii has somehow become a norm for the Magpies to start slowly. This is the third time in five years they have lost their opening two league matches. They have Burnley at home next on Wednesday in the EFL Cup and then host Southampton in the league on Saturday. After back-to-back defeats, it feels like an important week. As for the visitors, Southampton earned a fully-deserved draw at St Mary's against Man Utd last weekend. The Saints earned their first point of the campaign and even threatened to grab the victory. Now, after bouncing back impressively from defeat at Everton in their first game, Hasenhuttl will be hoping his side can earn a first league win of the season.
MAGPIES SHOW TOO LITTLE IMPROVEMENT FROM LAST SEASON
Last week’s Danny Ings’s overhead kick was a goal worthy of winning any game but Aston Villa’s victory was secured by two VAR decisions that went against Newcastle. Newcastle have now lost both their opening games but only after David Coote, the referee decided to award a handball against Jamaal Lascelles, the Newcastle captain, for Anwar El-Ghazi to score a 62nd-minute penalty. From then on, Steve Bruce's side showed little sign of mounting a recovery.
After managing just a single effort on target throughout the 90 minutes, however, the Magpies can have few complaints with the result. Also, the Magpies’ boss - who felt his team made a “decent” start to the match - will know controversial decisions shouldn’t mask their deficiencies. Maybe some harsh decisions have gone against Newcastle in the first two matches, but ultimately they haven't been good enough to win either. It’s big trouble for Newcastle already.
A MASSIVE SHIFT FROM THE SAINTS
Incredibly, Southampton have dropped 42 points from winning positions in PL games against Man Utd, but have obviously learned from previous games. That's good to see. Fans have to give Ralph a little bit of credit because he stuck with what he had from the last game, he believed in what he was doing. Then at the start of the second half, he got his tactics wrong, and that's when the goal came, but he rectified the problem and the team looked a lot better. The positives are there.
They rode the immediate United pressure and their own nerves out to take a point, and in all honesty, if Armstrong had taken his chance one on one with De Gea it may have been more! The Saints have far too much talent and ability to be spoken about so negatively, and I'd be surprised if they were anywhere close to the relegation zone once the league table starts to properly show. Southampton had the look of the teamwork we got used to in the recent past. They'll give everyone a game in that form.

The Magpies have lost just one of their last 16 home Premier League games against Southampton (W12 D3), and have also won their last four home Premier League matches against Saints. However, on current form, a draw is looking more likely, but we wouldn’t dare pick a winner here as both sides are too inconsistent – both teams have scored in four of their last five head-to-heads though, so we stick with that for our BettingKick’s Newcastle vs Southampton prediction.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
