Northern Ireland host Switzerland at Windsor Park (Belfast) in the UEFA 2022 World Cup Qualifications and the game kicks of at 7.45 pm (UK) on Wednesday, September 8. Read our reasons for Northern Ireland vs Switzerland prediction and betting tips.
TIGHT 90 MINUTES EXPECTED AT WINDSOR PARK
A buoyant Northern Ireland will attempt to make it an unusual three-in-a-row set of wins when they face the Swiss on Wednesday and put themselves right back in the World Cup mix. Ian Baraclough's side followed up their excellent 4-1 qualifying win in Lithuania with a narrow victory in Estonia, but they would pale into insignificance if they could get the three points against the world's 14th ranked team in Belfast which would draw them level with Switzerland. The Swiss should be confident enough themselves having held group leaders and Euro 2020 champions Italy to a goalless draw in Basel. So it's a huge ask for Northern Ireland, who will at least be backed by a loud, passionate home crowd at Windsor Park.
IRELAND DARES TO DREAM
Northern Ireland boosted their hopes of challenging for a top-two finish in World Cup qualifying Group C when romping to a 4-1 win in Lithuania last week. Daniel Ballard and Shayne Lavery scored from open play in Vilnius, while Conor Washington and Paddy McNair converted penalties. Ian Baraclough’s side started out in this pool with a 2-0 loss in Italy before drawing 0-0 at home to Bulgaria.
Northern Ireland will be looking to make the most of their home advantage against a Switzerland side that held the European champions Italy to a goalless draw at the weekend, despite having some of their key players missing through injury. It will take a huge effort to advance but Sunday’s 1-0 friendly success in Estonia, thanks to Shane Ferguson’s 75th-minute strike, was another solid effort. Being able to make nine changes over the weekend should ensure Ireland head into this contest fresh enough.
THE ROSSOCROCIATI JUST TOO STRONG
Switzerland did remarkably well to almost reach the semi-finals of Euro 2020, getting the better of France on penalties before only losing to Spain via a shoot-out. The Rossocrociati previously began this campaign with wins over Bulgaria and Lithuania back in March. Sunday’s goalless stalemate with Italy in Basel cemented their position as favourites to progress alongside the Azzurri from this pool.
Switzerland were grateful for a string of saves from keeper Yann Sommer, including Jorginho’s poor penalty miss, but will look to play more themselves in Belfast. Injured duo Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri will be missed in midfield, but Benfica forward Haris Seferovic spearheads a talented team of players plying their trade in top divisions around Europe. That extra edge in quality can shine through in Belfast.

Northern Ireland have enjoyed a successful international break so far, but things are about to get much trickier when hosting Switzerland. They haven't won any of their last eight home games in all competitions and go up against a Swiss side that impressed at Euro 2020 in the summer. The visitors are as high as 14 in the FIFA rankings, 37 places above their hosts, and have developed into a really consistent side. Switzerland secured a win in their last trip to Northern Ireland back in 2017 and we're expecting the visitors to pitch all 3pts on Wednesday night.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
