Benfica had a little luck in defeating PSV 2-1 at home, but this result leaves the tie wide open ahead of the return leg in the Netherlands on Tuesday. Read our PSV vs Benfica prediction and betting tips.
PSV had a perfect season before first leg against Benfica at the Estádio da Luz. They started the match as league leaders in Eredivisie and with great self-confidence after matches with Galatasaray and Midttjyland in the previous stages of the qualifiers. They conceded an early goal, in the 10th minute after Pizzi and Roman Yaremchuk combined to slide a pass for Rafa Silva, who found the net with a left-footed shot. That shooked PSV and made them almost unrecognizable until the end of the first half, and hosts got a second goal on the brink of half-time, with defensive midfielder Julian Weigl tucking a Nicolás Otamendi knock-down from few meters.
The second half was a completely different story, as the young PSV team coached by German Roger Schmidt doubled their efforts. They had several chances until the end of the game and Gakpo scored a consolation goal for visitors. Van Ginkel, Gotze, Madueke had decent opportunities in the second term but Vlachodimos showed why he is the first goalkeeper for the Lisabon team. Youngster Madueke was a constant threat for the left side of Benfica’s defense and some reports suggest PSV will receive an Everton offer after the second leg. That match ended PSV’s 16-game unbeaten run, connecting 13 wins and three draws. Cambuur was their opponent at the weekend but PSV got an easy 4-1 in the Eredivisie that got them leveled at the top with Feyenoord and Heerenveen, six points after two matches in the domestic league.
PSV: Drommel; Mwene, Ramalho, Boscagli, Max; Van Ginkel, Sangare; Madueke, Gotze, Gakpo; Zahavi
Portuguese giants got a two-goal lead in the first half following Rafa Silva's opener and a goal from Julian Weigl from close range to send Benfica into the break with a huge advantage, but the Dutch team had a great second 45 minutes to help them erase their deficit to half. PSV was a much better team after the break, and they should score more goals. Only one came from an outside shot from Cody Gakpo who deservedly was the man of the match. Benfica had many problems at the back in the second half, but as the end was nearing PSV was also fatigued and lost creativity in the final third. The Dutch team probably deserved the draw but paid the price for their defensive mistakes and could be happy with the first match regarding performance.
Benfica needs a much better display in the second leg as they were vulnerable in the second half. They feel the pressure because their main goal for the season depends on the next match. If they fail to jump in the UCL group stage Jorge Jesus must have an almost perfect season in Portugal to silence the doubters. They signed winger Nemanja Radonjić from Marseille on loan to get some speed in the attack but they had a hard time at the weekend in Primeira. Benfica won 2-0 away against Gil Vicente with two goals in 83th and 85th minute from central defender Lucas Veríssimo and left-back Alex Grimaldo. Jan Vertonghen, Haris Seferovic, and Ferro are still out because of injuries.
Benfica: Vlachodimos; Lucas, Otamendi, Morato; Goncalves, Weigl, Mario, Grimaldo; Pizzi, Yaremchuk, R Silva

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
