Poland host England at the PGE Narodowy Stadium (Warsaw) in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifications and the match kicks off at 7.45 pm (UK) on Wednesday, September 8. Read our reason for Poland vs England prediction and betting tips.
POLAND VS ENGLAND: STATS & FACTS
A thumping 7-1 away victory against San Marino kept Poland in the second spot in World Cup Qualification (WCQ) Group I at the halfway point of this cycle. That’ll keep confidence high as the hosts aim to qualify for their fourth finals appearance in nine attempts, although their dreadful record against visiting England (W1, D7, L12) will be a major cause for concern here. At least the hosts can fall back on their fantastic recent home form which has seen them lose just once in their last 14 internationals (W9, D4). Meanwhile, recording 12 clean sheets in their last 15 matches (W12, D3), England’s strong back line could be the route to victory again here. In fact, over their last 12 World Cup Qualifying away fixtures, the Three Lions have conceded just four times, albeit one of those strikes came in a 1-1 stalemate against Poland in their last away WCQ head-to-head clash.
POLAND VS ENGLAND: PRE-MATCH TALK
Poland have picked up 10 points from their other four fixtures in Group I and currently trail England by five points. Paulo Sousa's side brushed Albania 4-1 and Sunday saw a 7-1 rout of San Marino in Serravalle. The Eagles will be delighted to have Robert Lewandowski on song as he has netted six times so far. Adam Buksa hit a hat-trick over the weekend and this typically athletic Poland team looks in fine spirits. Even though Euro 2020 sadly proved yet another disappointing major tournament, everything suggests the Poles should give England a good work-out.
As for England, they arrive in Warsaw after recording a dominant 4-0 triumph over minnows Andorra at the weekend and will be looking to extend their lead at the top of Group I, having won all five of their prior WCQ fixtures. As a result, another victory would effectively seal the visitors’ passage to Qatar 2022, but with this being their hardest group stage fixture on paper, Gareth Southgate’s side won’t take their opposition lightly. They won the reverse fixture 2-1 on home soil but that was against a Poland side without Robert Lewandowski. They are favourites but another tough game is expected.
POLAND VS ENGLAND: TEAM NEWS
Robert Lewandowski was injured when Poland faced England in the reverse qualifier back in March but is back available for this one. The Bayern Munich striker has scored six goals in four qualifiers during this campaign and remains Poland's danger man. Paulo Sousa has mixed between a back four and five during this international break so it's unclear what system he will opt for against England on Wednesday.
Gareth Southgate made 11 changes on Sunday but is expected to revert back to his XI from their first qualifier of the break against Hungary, though a back three is an option. Tyrone Mings is suspended through bookings but wouldn't have started here anyway. Kyle Walker is more likely to drop in if Southgate opts for a 3-4-3 formation with Reece James or Kieran Trippier starting at right wing-back. Jesse Lingard will have to settle for a place on the bench despite having a perfect game against Andorra.

England have gone 17 games against Poland without defeat since a famous 1973 loss in World Cup qualifying, winning 11 of those subsequent meetings. However, matches between these teams are traditionally competitive, including March’s 2-1 Wembley victory for the Three Lions. We expect Gareth Southgate’s side to prevail, but both teams to score is our final BettingKick Poland vs England prediction.
