Republic of Ireland host Azerbaijan at the Aviva Stadium (Dublin) in the UEFA 2022 World Cup Qualifications and the game kicks of at 5 pm (UK) on Saturday, September 4. Read our reasons for the Republic of Ireland vs Azerbaijan prediction and betting tips.
IRELAND AND AZERBAIJAN MEET FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER
Ireland meet Azerbaijan for the first time in what is a must-win clash for both countries as they look for their first points in these Qualifications. The Irish will be reeling after leading Portugal until the 89th minute on Wednesday before a late brace from record-breaking international scorer Cristiano Ronaldo compiled more heartache on Head Coach Stephen Kenny, who now has just one win from 14 matches in charge. Another team to suffer a 2-1 loss in midweek, Azerbaijan succumbed to Luxembourg which has left their very faint WC 2022 hopes in tatters. Considering they’ve only ever won seven qualifying matches since being recognized as an independent nation, their last coming against San Marino in 2017, it’s no shock that they’ve never reached a major tournament.
HOME ADVANTAGE FAVOURS THE IRISH
Ireland will try and pick themselves off the floor after their heartbreaking midweek loss to a Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired Portugal when they welcome Azerbaijan to Dublin. Stephen Kenny's side led Portugal on Wednesday 1-0 until the 89th minute before a Ronaldo double. For those hoping for a surprise result, Ireland appear to have forgotten the art of causing an upset, despite coming close on several occasions recently.
For all the hard-luck stories and sympathy surrounding the Irish, it's the latest setback for Kenny with Ireland now having lost all three of their Qatar 2022 qualifiers and they are, barring a miracle, already effectively out of contention. They are a team in major transition and in the middle of a truly horrific run – that defeat in Faro means they have now won one game in 17 and that was a friendly in Andorra.
AZERBAIJAN’S AWAY STRUGGLES TO CONTINUE
They face Gianni De Biasi's Azerbaijani side who are in a similarly hellish run having also lost all three of their World Cup qualifiers and they have won one of their last 12 games (away in Belarus), losing last nine in a row. Also, after keeping three consecutive clean sheets in September/October 2016, Azerbaijan have conceded at least once in each of their last 18 European qualifying matches, shipping 42 goals in total.
Azerbaijan are certainly no strangers to playing away from their home nation as 14 of their previous 15 international fixtures have taken place outside of Azerbaijan (W2, D4, L8). Winning just two WCQ away matches ever in their history, the visitors have also only ever scored nine WCQ away goals! Azerbaijan clearly rely on the offensive talents of Emin Mahmudov, the scorer of three of their last five international goals.

It's impossible to put any faith in the Irish these days. While they may have been desperately unlucky to lose in Portugal, it's fair to say they did ride their luck for long periods of the game and on another day, Portugal would have scored plenty if they took their chances. And the last time they played so-called minnows at home, they managed to lose to Luxembourg. Having said that, Azerbaijan rarely get thrashed as all of their last six defeats have been by a single goal. Under 2.5 goals looks like a decent bet for our BettingKick Republic of Ireland vs Azerbaijan prediction.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
