Republic of Ireland host Serbia at the Aviva Stadium (Dublin) in the UEFA 2022 World Cup Qualifications and the game kicks of at 7.45 pm (UK) on Tuesday, September 7. Read our reasons for the Republic of Ireland vs Serbia prediction and betting tips.
THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND VS SERBIA: STATS & FACTS
The Republic of Ireland have never beaten Serbia in six previous attempts and suffered a 3-2 defeat earlier in this World Cup qualifying campaign. In three previous meetings in Ireland, Serbia have won two and drawn one, most recently a 1-0 victory in a World Cup qualifying match in Dublin thanks to a winning goal from Aleksandar Kolarov. The Republic of Ireland are winless in their last seven competitive home games (D5, L2), only once having a longer such run without a victory (8 games between May 1967-October 1972). Serbia, on the other hand, have won their last four away qualifying matches for major tournaments their longest run since they became an independent nation. Their last away defeat in qualifying was against Ukraine in June 2019.
THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND VS SERBIA: PRE-MATCH TALK
A lack of composure in the final third resulted in a draw against the Azarbaijan side ranked 112th in the world with Shane Duffy sparing Ireland blushes with a late header to earn a draw in Dublin. While they avoided a repeat of the disastrous home loss to Luxembourg in March, the result sees the Republic extend their record winless competitive run to 15 games. They also failed to build on the encouraging display in Wednesday's last-gasp 2-1 defeat by Portugal. Having failed to pick up a point from their first three qualifiers, the draw leaves the Irish further adrift of the top two with Serbia beating Luxembourg to join Portugal on 10 points.
As for Serbia, Aleksandar Mitrovic's rich vein of form continued as he scored a first-half brace which helped Serbia to a 4-1 home win over Luxembourg on Saturday that sent them top of Group A. Mitrovic is also at the top of the Championship Golden Boot table with four strikes for the Cottagers, so is clearly the danger man in Dublin. Serbia can blow hot and cold, though, and they were lucky to draw with Scotland in a Euro 2020 play-off before bowing out on penalties. There is also a chance that playing three quick matches this early in the season will take a toll, but they remain the slight favourites here.
THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND VS SERBIA: TEAM NEWS
Ireland have no injury concerns after their draw with Azerbaijan on Saturday, but it would not be a surprise to see head coach Stephen Kenny make a couple of alterations to his starting XI. Conor Hourihane is pushing for a spot in the middle of the park, while Daryl Horgan replaced Aaron Connolly at the interval of the match against Azerbaijan and that change could now occur ahead of kickoff here. Adam Idah is again expected to lead the line for the home side, while Duffy, John Egan, and Seamus Coleman are likely to operate as the back three for Kenny's side.
Meanwhile, Covid issues have cost Serbia the services of Aleksandar Kolarov and Crystal Palace midfielder Luka Milivojevic. Head coach Stojkovic does not have any injury concerns at this stage, and it would not be a surprise to see the same starting XI from Saturday's 4-1 success. As a result, Lazio's Sergej Milinkovic-Savic should again feature in an advanced area for the Eagles, while Dusan Tadic and Nemanja Gudelj are certain starters on Tuesday night.

Ireland’s World Cup qualification hopes look in tatters and they have never beaten Group A leaders Serbia in six meetings. Serbia have scored 11 times in their four matches in the group to sit at the summit, and we are expecting the visitors to put another three points on the board here.
