Scotland host Moldova at Hampden Park (Glasgow) in the World Cup Qualifications and the match kicks off at 7.45 pm (UK) on Saturday, September 4. Read our reason for Scotland vs Moldova prediction and betting tips.
SCOTLAND VS MOLDOVA: STATS & FACTS
Scotland’s last WC appearance was back in 1998, which also happens to be the first WC Moldova had the chance to qualify for as an independent nation. Unsurprisingly the eastern European country didn’t make that tournament - or any of the following to this point - and travel to Glasgow with a 71% loss rate in WCQ games in their history. That’s still better than the 75% they’ve managed this campaign though (D1, L3), a campaign that’s already seen Moldova record their biggest-ever defeat on the international stage (8-0 vs Denmark). Scotland and Moldova last faced in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup – after a 1-1 draw in Chisinau, the Scots won 2-0 at Glasgow. Moldova have faced the British home nations on eight previous occasions in World Cup qualifying, losing seven and drawing one – they have lost their last five by an aggregate score of 17-0.
SCOTLAND VS MOLDOVA: PRE-MATCH TALK
Scotland’s World Cup qualification campaign is already on shaky ground after two goals from Denmark within 93 seconds saw the Scots downed in Copenhagen, putting them two points and two places behind second - the position they held before kick-off. This fixture against bottom-side Moldova couldn’t have come at a better time then, although the Scots haven’t always had their way in WCQ head-to-heads (W1, D1). Clarke’s men are still well in the mix for second place alongside Israel and Austria but getting back to winning ways this weekend is essential.
Moldova are as low down as 175 in the FIFA rankings, nestled in between Indonesia and St Lucia. They kicked off their Group F campaign with a 1-1 home draw versus fellow minnows the Faroe Islands and have since suffered a trio of defeats. Roberto Bordin’s side were crushed 8-0 by Denmark, lost 4-0 at home to Israel and went down 2-0 to Austria in Chisinau this week. A 1-0 friendly win over Azerbaijan in June warrants some respect but the visitors have drawn a blank up front in nine of their last 12 fixtures.
SCOTLAND VS MOLDOVA: TEAM NEWS
Injuries and Covid issues have hampered preparations for the trip to Copenhagen. Manager Steve Clarke will hope to be boosted by the return of a number of players after his squad was hit by a number of Covid call-offs. John McGinn, Stephen O’Donnell, Kevin Nisbet, and Nathan Patterson could all be available again having missed out on Denmark. Midfielders Scott McTominay and Stuart Armstrong were already ruled out and were also joined by Celtic duo James Forrest and Greg Taylor.
As for Moldova, do not have any injured players ahead of Saturday’s game. Ion Nicolaescu picked up a red card in Moldova's last game against Israel and is suspended for Saturday’s game. Moldova lack international experience between the sticks but in defense, they have plenty in the form of Armas, Posmac, and Jardan. Goals are a struggle for this Moldova side with strikers Damascan, Antoniuc, and Nicolaescu netting a total of 7-goals between them in a combined 84-caps.

While the hype around qualifying for the European Championships helped develop a welcome feel-good factor around the national team, the reality is that Scotland have not been in particularly good form for most of the past year. Since beating Serbia in their Euro play-off last November, Clarke’s team have played 11 matches and won only two – against the Faroe Islands and Luxembourg. Scotland now desperately need to pick up maximum points when hosting Moldova to get back in the race for a top-two finish Group F.
