Southampton host Man Utd at St.Mary’s Stadium (Southampton) in the 2nd round of the 2021/22 Premier League season and the match kicks off at 1 pm (UK) on Sunday, August 22. Read our reasons for Southampton vs Man Utd prediction and betting tips.
SOUTHAMPTON VS MAN UTD: STATS & FACTS
In their last league meeting in February, Man Utd inflicted a 9-0 defeat on Southampton, the joint-biggest PL victory in history. Moreover, Southampton have beaten United just once in 13 league meetings at St Mary’s and are winless in 10 home league games against the Red Devils. Man Utd are unbeaten in their last 26 away league matches and a win or draw here would see the Red Devils equal the longest away unbeaten in English top-flight history, set by Arsenal (27). Players to keep an eye on are Bruno Fernandes Che Adams, who has been directly involved in four goals in his last four Premier League games for Southampton (two goals, two assists).
SOUTHAMPTON VS MAN UTD: PRE-MATCH TALK
Southampton finishing 15th last season was much lower than most fans had hoped for, with the Saints followers used to seeing their side battle for a top-half finish. Things didn’t go according to plan in the opening match of this campaign when the Saints were beaten 3-1 at Goodison Park by a hard-working and determined Everton side. They grabbed the lead in that game thanks to Scotsman Stuart Armstrong on his Premier League debut, but Southampton’s defensive worries returned, and they ended a well-beaten side. The pressure is definitely on the home team to improve on what we saw from them last week.
As for Man Utd, they travel to St. Mary on Sunday looking to pile the pressure on Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, after making a dream start to their campaign by thumping rivals Leeds 5-1 at Old Trafford, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a hat-trick and Paul Pogba laying on four of the goals. United ended as runners-up behind Man City last season, but the signs are there to suggest the Red Devils are still improving and pundits are beginning to take United’s chances seriously. We will see in what’s left of 2021 if the team has what it takes to stay on the heels of the leaders and serve up a challenge.
SOUTHAMPTON VS MAN UTD: TEAM NEWS
James Ward-Prowse recovered from a knee injury to start Southampton's opening game, while Adam Armstrong scoring on his debut last weekend is also a massive boost following Danny Ings' exit. Jan Bednarek and Kyle Walker-Peters will push for starts in defence this weekend. Stuart Armstrong, Nathan Tella, and Nathan Redmond remain options on the flanks for the home side. Finally, Oriol Romeu missed a lot of last season through injury but Saints will need him to be in the thick of the action to help them climb up the table.
Meanwhile, at Man Utd, New signing Raphael Varane may have to settle for a place on the bench initially following Victor Lindelof's strong display last time out. Jesse Lingard has recovered from COVID-19 and will push Jadon Sancho for a start against Southampton, with Dan James potentially dropping out. Alex Telles and Marcus Rashford are both still injured for Man Utd. Also, there is no real rush to start Anthony Martial after Mason Greenwood's standout performance last week, though the latter could move out to the right.

United look in the mood to really start this season strong and should be expected to make light work of Southampton. However, games between these two at St. Mary's are generally tight affairs. Three of the last six have ended in draws and United have only won the other three by a one-goal margin. It is worth noting that Saints had previously scored in five straight encounters with the Red Devils, so BettingKick is going for both teams to score this weekend as our Southampton vs Man Utd prediction.
