Italy coach Roberto Mancini could start Manuel Locatelli against Switzerland in the derby of the World Cup qualifiers at St. Jakob-Park in Basel on Sunday. Read our reasons for Switzerland vs Italy prediction and betting tips.
Switzerland made the biggest surprise at EURO, beating world champions France after penalties, and with that kind of confidence and new manager Murat Yakin they are trying to extend a good start in the qualifiers. A perfect record with two wins after two games is under question as EURO champions Italy are unbeaten in 35 games. Yakin, ex-Swiss international is sure his side needs a top performance, knowing that Italy's draw against Bulgaria was just a one bad day at the office for Mancini and his players. Logically, these teams are playing for the top spot in this group, and every point counts. Only defeat will be a negative result on Sunday evening.
After Vladimir Petković left for Bordeaux after several years of good results with the Swiss national team, Yakin has a tough job to be better in the new role. He was known as a creative player, using his imagination to give his teammates the best scoring chance if possible so it will be logical to see something new regarding formation or style of play. In search of an immediate impact, he tried some tactical experiments in a small amount of time with players in limited training sessions. On the other hand, against Italy as European champions, it is hard to believe they will mix a lot at this moment. Switzerland was beaten 3-0 by their next opponents in the group stages, but after that match, they played much better against any other rival in the tournament. The first aim is to make the midfield and defense more solid, as goalkeeper Yann Sommer was the man of the match few times at EURO.
Switzerland: Sommer; Schar, Elvedi, Akanji; Widmer, Zakaria, Sow, Freuler, Rodriguez; Vargas, Seferovic
Italy won just a point against Bulgaria in a surprising 1-1 draw on Thursday, and midfielder Marco Verratti sustained a knock to the knee. Ex-Sassuolo player, now trying to settle in the Juve team, Manuel Locatelli should step in, despite not starting a game yet this season for the Torino team. Against Bulgaria, not many things have gone according to Italy plans, the match didn't have a fast rhythm due to many unusual individual errors and misplaced passes. Italy had their chances, they didn’t lack creativity but Lorenzo Insigne and Nicolo Barella missed the biggest chances for the win. Once again, Ciro Immobile got bad ratings from Italian media, as he didn’t play on the same level as in Lazio's shirt for the national team.
Mancini still believes in the experienced forward who is working a lot for the team, opens space for teammates playing more like false nine than a classic central striker. Mancini has alternatives, Italy has a wide and quality roster and can’t depend on one player, and the first in line could be Roma attacking midfielder Nicolò Zaniolo who is pushing to feature after recovering from two serious knee injuries in under a year. Chiesa is still the man to watch, as he was again by far the best performer in Italy shirt. He is a class act, doing many things at the same time for the national team, providing speed, assists, final touch, giving his teammates a chance to come to the final third from the deep.
Italy: Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Chiellini, Bonucci, Emerson; Verratti, Jorginho, Barella; Insigne, Immobile, Chiesa

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
