Tottenham host Watford at Tottenham Spurs Stadium (London) in the 3rd round of the 2021/22 Premier League season and the match kicks of at 2 pm (UK) on Sunday, August 29. Read our reasons for Tottenham vs Watford prediction and betting tips.
TOTTENHAM VS WATFORD: STATS & FACTS
Watford have only beaten Spurs four times in their history. Their most recent win against the Spurs came in the 2018/19 season, as they won their home game 2-1. However, both games in Watford’s last Premier League campaign back in 2019/20 ended in draws. The hosts are looking to win each of their first three league games for just the second time in the last 12 seasons, while they’ve never won their first three games of a league campaign without conceding in their Football League history. The Hornets’ poor away record will play into their hands as they have lost each of their last seven Premier League away games, failing to score on five occasions in that run. While Spurs will be relieved that Harry Kane is going nowhere, at least for now, Watford will also have to keep an eye on Dele Alli, who has scored six times in eight games facing Hornets and Son Heung-min, who has scored five goals in nine appearances against Watford.
TOTTENHAM VS WATFORD: PRE-MATCH TALK
Spurs built on a superb success versus Man City at this venue by edging out Wolves on the road, thanks to Dele Alli’s 10th-minute penalty. Early optimism over climbing back up the Premier League table following a disappointing seventh-placed finish last term was tempered by speculation about Kane’s future. However, the England captain has insisted he is “100 per cent focused” on the club after a move to the champions failed to materialise.
As for Watford, they returned to the top flight with a handy 3-2 triumph over Aston Villa but had their bubble burst by a 2-0 defeat at Brighton. Ismaila Sarr and Emmanuel Dennis had caught the eye versus Villa but never managed to get going at Amex Stadium after a tepid performance. The Hornets did bounce back with a 1-0 EFL Cup win over Crystal Palace on Tuesday, which featured a debut for former Spurs full-back Danny Rose. Watford may have to wait for a kinder run of fixtures after the international break to add to their points tally, though.
TOTTENHAM VS WATFORD: TEAM NEWS
Seeing that Harry Kane returned to the squad in the 1-0 win over Wolverhampton, it is no wonder the bookies see Nuno Espirito Santo’s men as hot favourites to win Sunday’s game. Kane is pushing for a start, while Nuno Espirito Santo has no fresh injury worries ahead of the visit of Watford and is expected to stick with the same XI that beat Man City and Wolves last weekend. As for transfer gossip, Spurs, along with Liverpool, have been linked with Lille's Sven Botman, 21.
Meanwhile, at Watford, before Tuesday's Carabao Cup tie against the Eagles, head coach Xisco Munoz told his players to force him to pick them for Sunday’s match at Tottenham. And in the victory over the Eagles, two players certainly did that. Central defender Francesco Sierralta featured after joining up late due to Copa America duty with Chile and has surely forced his way into the side against Spurs. Full back Danny Rose is still not 100% fit or match sharp but despite that showed what experience can bring to performance and rolled back the years; it would be no surprise to see him get the nod in North London.

Spurs have looked effective at both ends of the field so far this season, and they will be keen to put on a show in front of their home fans this weekend. Spurs should get the three points, and Kane may also get himself on the scoresheet for the first time this season. Nuno Espirito Santo has started out with a couple of hard-fought 1-0 wins but may see this as a chance to open up more.
