Ajax host Liverpool in the first round Group D clash in the Champions League at the Johan Cruyjff Arena (Amsterdam) on Wednesday, October 21 and the match kicks off at 8pm (UK).
MATCH PREVIEW
Perhaps the most remarkable thing about this Champions League opener is that it is only the third time the two European power-houses, Ajax and Liverpool face each other. Their first two fixtures took place in the second round of the European Cup in 1966/67. Johan Cruyff scored three goals over two legs as Ajax won in Amsterdam and drew 2-2 at Anfield. Fast forward to 2020 and the season 2018/19 semifinalists Ajax host Liverpool, the winners from that season.
MATCH ANALYSIS
The first time Ajax introduced themselves and their Total Football to English football fans was in December 1966 when Rinus Michels’s side hammered Bill Shankly’s Liverpool 5-1 in the fog in Amsterdam. Remarkably the sides haven’t met in the European Cup/Champions League since, but with Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, Hakim Ziyech and Donny van de Beek all gone from the side that reached the semi-final the season before last, this is a much different Ajax side.
Unlike the years before where they looked fine, Dutch side is no longer a team they were until recently. Dusan Tadic still leads the team, but he is a shadow of a player who used to humiliate Real Madrid, and Ajax struggles because he remains among the few from the core of that team. David Neres will not feature as expected, and the biggest threat from Ajax will be their Brazilian young forward Antony.
The Reds are no mistery for anyone. They are here to win the Champions League, and anything else will not be considered a success for them, simple as that. Jurgen Klopp’s side won the Premiership, and after clinching the Champions League the year before, the German manager has enough credit for the foreseeable future. But they would not want to rest on their laurels, and will look for a fresh challenge. Klopp already indicated that the next goal is winning both the EPL and UCL.
That is why they signed midfielder Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich, and attacker Diogo Jota from Wolves. Liverpool needed to strengthen in all areas because of the upcoming challenges and tight schedule, but the recent incomings won’t change anything in their play philosophy. It will be on the front foot, direct and aggressive as always.

Ajax have only won 1 of their previous 6 games against English rivals in Europe (D2 L3), being winless in the most recent three since a 1-0 victory against Tottenham in the Champions League semi-final first leg in 2018/19.
This will be Liverpool’s first away game against Dutch opposition since September 2010, when they drew 0-0 at FC Utrecht in the UEFA Europa League. The Reds are unbeaten in their last six away trips to Holland, keeping a clean sheet in four of those (W3 D3).
Ajax have won just one of their previous seven home games in the UEFA Champions League (D2 L4) and Liverpool haven’t suffered three consecutive defeats in the competition since October-November 2014, under Brendan Rodgers.
My prediction is: Liverpool win

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
