The upcoming duel between Ajax and Rome should be one of the more exciting in the UEFA Europe League quarter-finals. Read our reasons for Ajax vs Rome prediction and betting tips.
The Dutch powerhouse team is in great form at the moment since they are unbeaten for 24 straight games. They’ve won all four of their previous games in the Europa League, and they are on a 4-game winning streak in the Eredivisie. The reigning Dutch champions edged Heerenveen to a 2-1 victory in their previous game and will be confident ahead of this fixture. The team from Amsterdam is cruising the Eredivisie, with 9 points ahead of their closest rivals. They are in great form with six straight wins in all competitions, and they’ve eliminated Lille and Young Boys by beating them in both legs. The Dutch outfit was one of the third-placed sides to drop out of the Champions League and into the second-string competition and they have certainly flexed their muscles since joining the competition. Even more impressive is Ajax’s current streak without a loss, which spans to 24 games ahead of the Roma game. Perhaps this is the best Ajax we’ve seen in the Ten Hag era. Everyone remembers the Ajax with De Ligt, De Jong, and van de Beek, the side that eliminated Real Madrid and Juventus from the Champions League. They had more talented players then, but have now improved tactically and are more of a team unit. Ten Hag’s football is focused on vertical passes and constant pressing, so if you can escape the press and pull one of the center-backs out of position, you can hurt Ajax, especially attacking their full-backs.
Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg is doubtful for the first leg of the quarter-final against his former club. Having ended his first spell at the Amsterdam side with a move to Roma in 2011, the Dutch international spent the next two seasons with the Giallorossi - making 55 appearances - but is currently struggling with a knee injury. The veteran stopper picked up the problem in the warm-up ahead of the match against Heerenveen, so Netherlands Under-21 goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen made an unexpected league debut - only his second appearance in the first team. Scherpen could therefore make his European bow if Stekelenburg fails to recover in time, with erstwhile first-choice Andre Onana still excluded for a doping offense. Full-back Noussair Mazraoui sustained a head injury in mid-February and is yet to make his return to action, while defensive stalwart Daley Blind could sit out another game due to a knee issue sustained on international duty. Ajax omitted record signing Sebastien Haller from their Europa League squad due to an administrative error - something which has plagued Roma this season too - so the 26-year-old Ivory Coast forward will have no part to play in the remainder of their continental campaign.
Ajax: Scherpen; Tagliafico, Alvarez, Martinez, Timber; Gravenberch, Klaassen, Rensch; Antony, Tadic, Neres
Roma denied reports of a dressing room bust-up between the players and coach Paulo Fonseca after their 2-2 draw against Sassuolo. The media reported Fonseca and Tiago Pinto spoke to the team during a training session, but some replied harshly. Roma, however, denied the report with a statement. "Roma categorically denies reports related to episodes of tension in the locker room, there was no discussion before the session, but the will of the club is to continue to fight on both fronts: league and Europa League.” The Giallorossi were held to a 2-2 away draw against Sassuolo on Saturday and sit seventh in the Serie A table, one point behind their city rivals Lazio. Roma coach Paulo Fonseca said the 2-2 draw with Sassuolo was not the ‘last chance’ to finish fourth. ‘Let’s continue to believe’. The Giallorossi were held to a draw by a late goal from Giacomo Raspadori at the Mapei Stadium and Fonseca’s men slipped up when their rivals got the job done in the other fixtures.
Roma's Stephan El Shaarawy will miss up to a fortnight's action after suffering a thigh injury in the draw with Sassuolo last weekend. It has also been confirmed that Albania defender Marash Kumbulla sustained an injured meniscus on international duty and will miss the remainder of the Giallorossi's 2020-2021 campaign while opting for a recovery route of rest and therapy rather than surgery. Attacking starlet Nicolo Zaniolo continues his recovery from a torn ACL while on Italy duty last year, but is not yet fit to return, while his fellow creative talent Henrikh Mkhitaryan is also still absent. Meanwhile, set-piece specialist Jordan Veretout has only just recovered from a serious thigh strain sustained before the international break, so Amadou Diawara is set to continue in central midfield.
Roma: Lopez; Mancini, Cristante, Smalling; Karsdorp, Diawara, Villar, Spinazzola; Pellegrini, Pedro; Mayoral

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
