Albania host England at the Air Albania Stadium (Tirana) in the Group I 2nd round match of the UEFA World Cup qualifications and the game kicks of at 5 pm (UK) on Sunday, March 28th. Read our reasons for Albania vs England prediction and betting tips.
Albania entered the World Cup qualifiers in high spirits after securing promotion to League B of the UEFA Nations League, winning three and drawing two of their six matches and for a third successive campaign, Albania won their World Cup Qualifying opener, this time out in Andora (1-0), in turn extending their unbeaten run to six games (W4, D2). Meanwhile, England's World Cup 2022 qualifying campaign started with a predictably routine stroll to a 5-0 victory against San Marino at Wembley. it is hard to see what manager Southgate learned from this one-sided experience against a team who were little more than cannon fodder. This was three points and move on to Albania on Sunday.
Edoardo Reja's side are unbeaten in their last five games and head into Sunday’s clash on their longest ever run without conceding in a competitive away game, keeping clean sheets in each of those. Albania, who have never qualified for a World Cup tournament, finished third behind Spain and Italy in their group for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers but will be hoping that they can go one step further and surprise everyone by sneaking into the top two this time around.
Victory against Andorra was imperative if Albania were to have any chance of progressing from Group I and reach their first major tournament since Euro 2016. However, against top-ten ranked UEFA nations, Albania have scored in just 3 of their last 11 competitive games and won only once (L10). If they’re to have a chance against England, they will likely have to net first as they had lost all five of their home games across the last EURO and World Cup campaigns to nil.
Meanwhile, the side rooted to the bottom of the Fifa world rankings at 210 were never going to be anything other than an easy target for England, even with captain Harry Kane starting on the bench, and so it proved in this one-sided qualifier behind closed doors. England were encamped in San Marino territory for the entire game and the only disappointment for manager Gareth Southgate will be the fact their finishing was very poor as they should have inflicted a much heavier loss on their besieged opponents.
Against Albania, it should be just another day at the office from Southgate’s perspective. For England, a team that isn’t lacking any quality at the moment and is brimming with talent, this is supposed to be a simple fixture where they can expect to come away with all three points. After a comfortable victory in their WCQ opener, England are unbeaten across 22 qualifying fixtures (W16, D6), and have also won seven of their last eight competitive games vs UEFA nations ranked within five places of Albania (D1). Everything else but another win here would be a huge surprise.

Albania meet England having previously lost all four games against the Albion, scoring only once and conceding 12 in the process. However, the two sides haven’t met since 2001 when Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler gave England a 2-0 victory. Albania have some good Serie A players in their ranks and it’s up to Albania’s newcomers and fresh blood to make history here, and come away with their first-ever win against the Three Lions of England. Ultimately, though, they should prove no real threat to England on Sunday.
