ARSENAL VS NEWCASTLE MATCH ANALYSIS
Three wins in a row, against Chelsea, Brighton, and most recently West Brom lifted some pressure off manager Mikel Arteta, who had seen his side go on a seven-game winless run in the league before that. They come to this FA Cup tie sitting in 11th place and looking reinvigorated after the Chelsea win had given the Gunners a boost. Newcastle, on the other hand, are 15th in the PL standings and are without a win in their last six league fixtures (D2, L4). They come into the match on the back of a 1-2 home defeat against Leicester and will have a tough job of knocking out Arteta’s Arsenal.
Mikel Arteta was pleased after they recorded three league wins on the trot for the first time since November by beating the Baggies on Saturday. Defeat at Everton on 19 December left them only four points above the relegation zone after 14 games - their worst start to the season since 1974-75. But fortunes changed with a surprise victory over Chelsea, which has now been followed up by two more wins on the road. Mikel Arteta has got Arsenal out of their slump and it has coincided with giving some of his younger squad members the chance to prove their worth. The likes of Emile Smith Rowe, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli have taken the bull by the horns and turned Arsenal’s fortunes around. Going into Saturday’s FA Cup clash and Arteta will ask the youngsters to do exactly what they did in those successes over Chelsea, Brighton, and West Brom, after some impressive displays in the Europa League.
As for the Magpies, they head to the capital without a win in six in all competitions, a run that includes a defeat by Championship side Brentford in the League Cup quarter-finals on December 22. That run of results has left them 15th in the Premier League, eight points above the relegation zone.
Steve Bruce would have liked to have had a real run at the FA Cup this season, with the Magpies without a major domestic trophy since 1955, but the fact that Newcastle look to have been dragged into a relegation tussle is likely to force him to make a number of changes to his starting XI. Their squad is thin and with the manager admitting that their fringe players don’t look strong enough to win at an in-form Arsenal.

Arsenal have only been eliminated at the third round stage of the FA Cup in one of the last 24 campaigns (2017/18) and have progressed/won four of their last five against the Magpies in the competition, most recently a 3-0 win at the Emirates in the fourth round in 2007-08.
Newcastle’s last three away games against Arsenal in the FA Cup have all ended in 0-3 defeats (1936, 2002, 2008) and have been eliminated from 10 of their last 11 FA Cup ties against fellow Premier League opposition, with the exception being a 2-1 win against Blackburn in January 2012.
