Arsenal host Villarreal at the Emirates Stadium (London) in the second leg of the UEFA Europa League semi-finals and the match kicks off at 8 pm (UK) on Thursday, May 6. Read our reasons for Arsenal vs Villarreal prediction and betting tips.
Former Gunners boss Unai Emery returns to Emirates Stadium with a battle-hardened outfit packed full of experienced performers well equipped to cope with the pressure of a narrow 2-1 advantage. Villarreal dropped just two points during the group stage and have now won seven straight matches in the knockout rounds and the Yellow Submarine look on a mission to continue Spain’s great record in this competition. A controversial penalty decision allowed Arsenal to get back into the tie in Spain but Emery can guide his men to a London draw which would be enough to earn a place in the final.
Mikel Arteta’s side were beaten 2-1 in the first leg. However, confidence will be there within the Gunners camp, as the Nicolas Pepe penalty with 15 minutes remaining in the first leg was the crucial away goal that they desperately craved. Arsenal’s record after losing the first leg of a European tie has been decent recently, as they have progressed from both previous games in which they have been beaten in the first leg.
Arsenal have a difficult job on their hands this week, as they look to reach the final of the competition for the second time in three seasons, but will have to ensure that they win in the English capital on Thursday. Mikel Arteta opted to start without a recognised striker in Spain and would no doubt love to have Alexandre Lacazette back from injury and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on form again. However, the Gunners will have to adopt a more positive approach here.
As for Villarreal, they have an excellent record after winning the first leg, as they have gone on to progress in 16 of the last 17 such ties. The only occasion that they were beaten after winning the first leg was against Liverpool in the semi-finals of this competition in the 2015-16 season. Villarreal’s form in European competition has been excellent over the past couple of seasons, as they are unbeaten in 13 games.
On the other hand, it would be dangerous for Villarreal to try and sit on their narrow lead, as a 1-0 defeat would see them crash out via the away goals rule. Emery may target an early strike in London to address that situation and has the attacking firepower to hurt the Gunners in Gerard Moreno and Paco Alcacer. Villarreal are unbeaten in 13 games in European competition (W12, D1), winning each of their last nine, and have enough experience to see this tie through.

Arsenal meet Villarreal for the sixth time since April 2006. The Gunners have won both previous matches at home, with their most recent win coming in a 3-0 success in April 2009. Villarreal’s win in the first leg was the first time that they had beaten the Gunners.
Villarreal’s excellent record after winning the first leg is a hard fact to look past. The Spanish side have control of this tie, and we could see this match ending in a draw, which would be enough for the Spanish side to reach the final.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
