ASTON VILLA VS WEST HAM MATCH ANALYSIS
Aston Villa bounced back from a 3-2 defeat at Burnley in midweek with a 1-0 win at Southampton. The Villans have two wins in five in all competitions (D1, L3), but with two games in hand, while being in 9th place, they are still on course to get into the mix for one of the European berths. As for West Ham, their four-game winning run in the league ended against Liverpool at home (1-3) on Sunday. This is Hammers’ first top-flight loss in seven matches (W4, D2) which has propelled them to 5th place, four points behind Leicester in 4th.
The hosts were without a win in 2021 (L2) prior to the Newcastle match on January 23. That’s after registering 11 points in the PL during December - their most in a single month since April 2010. They have now recorded 32 points after 19 games, a huge improvement on the 24 they managed after 19 rounds during 2019/20. This is Smith's side best points tally at the halfway stage of a Premier League campaign since 2009-10, when they finished sixth, and have now won more games in the competition in half a season than they did in the whole of the last one.
Against the Saints, for all Villa's entertaining attacking football this season, this was a victory in which the visitors had to dig in and, at times, ride their luck. Villa's failure to kill off the game at Turf Moor in midweek cost them against Burnley, but this time the visitors' goalkeeper kept them in the fixture. They also needed the creative spark of talismanic captain Grealish whose cross was met by Ross Barkley who headed home to earn three points that move them back within touching distance of a European spot.
David Moyes, on the other hand, has fashioned a very decent West Ham side that is disciplined while often creative and attack-minded. They have been rewarded for their enterprising play with some impressive results, notably big wins against Wolves and Leicester and draws at Manchester City and Tottenham. The Hammers are very much part of the teams that are within a touching distance of a Champions League berth and Moyes will be also be delighted with their defensive displays as of late.
However, against Liverpool at the weekend, they were too defensive, not playing the way they used to recently, with manager Moyes possibly being too wary of his recent failures to get anything from the Merseysiders. The Hammers briefly climbed into the CL places with Tuesday's win over Crystal Palace but this emphatic defeat is likely to dent any Hammers fans dreaming of a top-four push. This was an off-day for Moyes' side compared to their recent performances but their form overall this season will give them hope they can qualify for Europe for the first time this century.

Aston Villa have won just 1 of their last 9 top-flight meetings with West Ham (D5 L3), while Hammers are looking to secure their first league double over Aston Villa since 2005-06, having won 2-1 in the reverse fixture on November 30.
After a run of three consecutive home league defeats in which they conceded a total of nine goals, Villa have kept a clean sheet in each of their last three at home. The visitors, on the other hand, are looking to win three consecutive away league games for the first time since December 2018.
