ASTON VILLA VS BURNLEY MATCH ANALYSIS
Aston Villa got off to a fantastic start, having won their first four league matches, but have since suffered four defeats in six games (W2-L4), most recently against West Ham (2-1) in London on November 30. However, they saw off Wolves next at the Moulinex (0-1) at the weekend. The second win in the last six league games has been enough for 10th place with 18 points, albeit with two games in hand. As for Burnley, the Claret and Blues made a disappointingly slow start to the season, with the team collecting only 9 points from a possible 33. However, after their shocking win at Arsenal (0-1) on Sunday, they are out of the relegation zone in 17th for the first time since the new campaign started.
Villa suffered a huge dip in their form recently, with the team experiencing all sorts of defensive problems in three straight home defeats - to Leeds (0-3), Southampton (3-4), and lastly, Brighton (1-2). Villa were deservedly second-best in those games, unable to compete with the visitors' intensity and energy, but they nevertheless found the energy to squeeze in the win against Arsenal at the Emirates (0-3) in between two back-to-back defeats. Their latest win came deep into the stoppage-time at Wolverhampton.
Anwar El Ghazi converted a stoppage-time penalty on Saturday afternoon, as Aston Villa grabbed a win in the West Midlands derby. For the most part, this derby did not deliver the entertainment, but manager Dean Smith will surely not care a bit, having pulled off another fine result on the road after being down to 10 men in the last 1o minutes. Villa have now won four out of five away games in the league and had it not been for Luiz's red card, you might say it was the perfect away performance.
On the other hand, Sean Dyche has rightly been praised for his leadership there, with a modestly assembled Clarets squad - having provided a second top-10 finish in five Premier League seasons in 2019/2020. But an already thin squad is at its limits. They have also been very unfortunate with injuries and they still have many important players missing. Dyche had done wonders with the Clarets' modest squad before, so let's not write them off already, especially after their second league win of the season at the Emirates.
Burnley's winner on Sunday came after Xhaka was sent off on 58 minutes for grabbing the throat of Clarets midfielder Ashley Westwood. Desperately poor Arsenal side was booed off by their own supporters after Aubameyang's wretched run of form continued as he headed in his own net. Sean Dyche’s side has now suffered just one defeat, to Man City, in five games and are back on the right path so the Aston Villa match is likely to be a very tight game, even if Villa do have the individual quality to edge it.
