ASTON VILLA VS NEWCASTLE MATCH ANALYSIS
Wednesday's match at the Etihad was the first time Villa's senior side played since New Year's Day following an outbreak of coronavirus in their squad, with the club's only outing since then seeing their youngsters knocked out of the FA Cup Round 3 by a strong Liverpool side. With three games in hand, they are in good position to fight for the European berths, but this one will be a must win after four games without a win in the PL. As for the visitors, the Magpies have lost their last four away league matches and haven't won a competitive match since a 2-1 win over West Brom in mid-December. They are on an nine-game winless run (D2, L7) and are coming into this game on the back of a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates on Monday. They are seven points from safety in 15th place and could do with at least a point here.
After playing a fourth straight match against a team from last season’s top four, with the results not going their way (D1, L3), the hiosts are now without a win in 2021. That’s after registering 11 points in the PL during December - their most in a single month since April 2010. That has helped Villa to record 26 points after 16 games, a huge improvement on the 15 they managed after 16 rounds during 2019/20.
Coming into this game, only their Wednesday’s hosts, City have kept more clean sheets (10) in the Premier League this season than Aston Villa (8), but Villa have conceded very few goals on the road (7). While Villa’s teenagers were ultimately outgunned by Liverpool in their most recent FA Cup game, their brave display was further evidence of the progress Smith's side have made this season. The City game was the toughest test in this little barren run, and now they must turn to Newcastle to keep pushing for the top-six.
Newcastle, on the other hand, remain on the losing course. They were knocked out of the EFL Cup quarter-final by Championship side Brentford, lost to Arsenal in the Fa Cup and lost three more league games next. Giving the Blades their first win of the season, would probably hurt the most. Their misery in that game was further compunded by Ryan Fraser’s sending-off, meaning he was suspended for their Monday trip to the Emirates (3-0) and will be out of the team for Ssaturday’s match at the Villa Park, too.
For Newcastle it has been a rotten month since they beat West Brom. They have now lost four consecutive away league games for the first time since October 2019 and will have shake of the rustiness when they visit Birmingham next. Perhaps the most concerning element of their recent run has been the manner in which the goals have dried up, with the Magpies finding the back of the net just once in their last five Premier League outings. Everything seems to depend on Allan Saint-Maximin's fitness for the Magpies, who offer up little hope to their fans without him.

Aston Villa have won just one of their last 12 Premier League games against Newcastle (D6 L5), though they are unbeaten in four against the Magpies (W1 D3), winning 2-0 in this exact fixture last season.
Dean Smith will face a touchline ban having been sent from the sidelines at Manchester City and will be desperate for a swift return to winning ways following three matches without a victory. On the other hand, Steve Bruce is under real pressure to get a result, with a draw or defeat here stretching the club's winless streak to ten matches.
