Aston Villa host Sheffield Utd on the second Premier League day at the Villa Park (Birmingham) on Monday, September 21 and the kick-off is at 6pm (UK).
Aston Villa missed the trip to Manchester last weekend as their opening game was postponed due to Manchester city's late involvement in the 2019/2020 Champions League Quarter-final on August 15. Now, they start the new campaign at home against the Blades. Aston Villa did well to stay in the top flight last term, but they will likely be fighting the relegation battle again.
Sheffield Utd, on the other hand, were punching above their weight last season, and, as a result, secured a top-ten place in the table.They have started this season on the wrong foot as they lost their home opening match against Wolves (0-2) in the first six minutes of the game. Also, they have a second-round Carabao Cup game against another Premier League side, Burnley on Thursday, but they will probably field a weakened starting eleven, with one eye on the Monday's PL match.
Villa did officially start their new campaign with a 1-3 win against Burton Albion in a 2nd round Carabao Cup match last Tuesday. Villa, the last season's finalists, showed that they are in good shape at the start of the season. Jack Grealish, who signed a new five-year contract with Villa just recently, scored a wonderful volley, and Dean Smith will be particularly pleased with their £28m record signing Ollie Watkins, who levelled for Villa on his debut.
They are also stronger defensively, as in their new goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, they have a new pair of safe hands. On paper, the Claret & Blues definitely look stronger than last year, but Villa also did an excellent job behind the scenes. They have a new sporting director, Johan Lange from Copenhagen, and Smith has a new assistant manager Craig Shakespeare, the former Leicester boss. All in all, it looks like they are properly set for the start of the new season.
As for Sheffield Utd, they surpassed their wildest expectations last season in their return to the top division and came incredibly close to qualifying for Europe. They were in it until the very end but their heads dropped in the final weeks of the campaign. Now they have a dreaded second season ahead, which was costly for many former PL clubs.
The Blades need to quickly get over disappointment from their opening defeat against Wolves and in Chris Wilder they have a manager who’ll know how to get them back on track. However, it will be awfully hard to repeat the last year's campaign and more realistically, the number one goal for 20/21 will be to ensure they stay up comfortably.
