Aston Villa host Southampton at Villa Park (Birmingham) in the 7th round of the Premier League on Sunday. November 1 and the match kicks off at 12pm (UK).
MATCH PREVIEW
Aston Villa got off to a fantastic start, having won four games from five. They are in the 3rd place in the table with 12 points, albeit with a game in hand. Unfortunately, Leeds ended their unbeaten run from the back end of the last campaign (W7,D2) last Saturday and ruined their chance of going top of the Premier League. On Sunday, they host another in-form team, Southampton.
With two straight losses, the Saints looked like a disjointed side at the start of the new campaign, resembling the side they were at the beginning of the last year. However, they bounced back at Burnley (0-1) and West Brom at home (2-0), which was followed by a hard-fought draw (3-3) against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago and an impressive win against the league leaders Everton that took them to 7th place with 10 points.
MATCH ANALYSIS
The early signs are promising for Villa and they may prove many who had doubted them wrong before the league started, as Dean Smith’s side is clearly a better side this season. They have managed to keep most of the last year's stand-out players, namely Jack Grealish, Keinan Davis and England centre-back Tyrone Mings. At the start of a new campaign Villa have been more solid and aggressive defensively and their £28m record signing, forward Ollie Watkins has made an immediate impact up front.
Villa came into Friday's game against Leeds having won their first four games of a league campaign for the first time since 1930-31, but three expert finishes from the Leeds striker prevented the hosts making it a club record five victories on the spin. Villa were second best throughout, unable to compete with the visitors' intensity and energy and the key now will be whether Villa can respond to such a ruthless ending to their unbeaten streak.
As for the Saints, after 4 successive games without a defeat (W3-D1) the Saints suddenly look different, a more organized side. With the rest of the squad, including Jack Stephens, James Ward-Prowse and Stuart Armstrong still there, and Danny Ings, who almost finished the season with the Golden Boot to his name, they have a strong core of the team, who shouldn't be in a similar situation to last year. However, the Saints cannot rely solely on Ings and co. to win games on their own and will need to be more solid defensively.
Against Everton, last Sunday they were exactly that. They defeated the last remaining unbeaten team of the Premier League in an impressive and absolutely deserving win. Saints played with intensity and purpose and having lost their first two games of this season, they are now unbeaten in four, have three clean sheets in the process and are up to 7th in the table.
