Aston Villa host Stoke in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup at Villa Park (Birmingham) on Thursday, October 1 and the match kicks off at 7pm (UK).
MATCH PREVIEW
Aston Villa have played only one match in the Premier League so far, against Sheffield United on their opening day (1-0), where they thoroughly deserved their first Premier League win in 20/21.More importantly, they have continued the unbeaten run from the back end of the last campaign (W4,D2) which now includes two wins in the Carabao Cup which saw them progress to the fourth round.
Stoke have picked up four points from their first three matches in the league, after drawing to Millwall, losing at home against Bristol and winning away at Preston. They have also kept their Carabao Cup hopes alive by surprisingly defeating the Wolves on the road (0-1) in the second round, which was followed with a 1-0 win against the League One side Gillingham that set them up against Villa.
MATCH ANALYSIS
As for Villa, the early signs are promising and they may prove the doubters wrong as their manager Dean Smith believes his team are a better side this season. They have managed to keep most of the last year's stand-out players, namely Jack Graelish, forward Keinan Davis, England centre-back Tyrone Mings, while also signing Bertrand Traore from Lyon, who scored on his debut in a 0-3 win against Bristol in the third round of the Carabao Cup. At the start of a new campaign Villa have been more solid and aggressive defensively and their £28m record signing, forward Ollie Watkins has made an immediate impact up front. Villa look like a more settled team this season, and keeping the key players was probably the smartest decision they have made. After three wins in all comps they travel to the capital hoping to continue their unbeaten run.
After starting the campaign unconvincingly, Stoke have started to show signs of life with back-to-back 1-0 victories in the league and the cup. Stoke progressed into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a tight win over Gillingham. Tyrese Campbell scored the only goal of the match, placing after latching on to Jordan Thompson's brilliant pass. The Potters more than deserved their win, dominating from start to finish as Northern Ireland midfielder Thompson was superb throughout the match. They repeated that score-line in their first Championship win against Preston that followed, and even though there were a lot of positives to take from the game Michael O'Neill was the first to acknowledge that his players must improve in the final third having failed to score more than once in any of their five matches this season.

And now, for some facts and stats. Looking back over the last decade, the two sides have played 18 times. The Clarets & Blues have won 3 and the Potters have won 7 , while 8 matches ended in a draw. This is their first time ever they meet in cup competitions. They played two games in the Championship and the rest are Premier League matches.
There were 6 clean sheets in those 18 matches (30%). Aston Villa have won twice when they kept their net and Stoke only once. Three meetings ended in goalless draws.
Both teams have scored in 12 out of 18 matches these two teams have played recently. That makes it 66,6% of the games on average. Aston Villa's home games have seen 6 of their home matches ending with both teams scoring (W0-D4-L2), while Stoke have failed to score only twice (D1-L1) when away to Aston Villa.
Finally, when these sides have faced each other, there has been an average of 2.39 goals per game. Out of these, Aston Villa have scored an average of 1.06 goals, while Stoke have averaged 1.33.
My prediction: Under 2.5 goals

Wyatt grew up in the suburbs of London and he is a big Chelsea fan. As a young boy, he found his love for football, which became an obsession, but when he tried playing it he soon realized that he just wasn't talented enough. Bearing that in mind, Wyatt decided to learn everything there is to know about all the teams and players, with special focus on Premier League and Championship . Wyatt has a big affection for Championship and he is well versed in all the teams and knows their advantages and weak spots very well. He is an economist, and being one makes him good with numbers and also good with the odds. His specialty are BTTS matches.
