Aston Villa host Tottenham at the Villa Park (Birmingham) in the 29th round of the Premier League and the match kicks off at 7.30 pm (UK) on Sunday, March 21. Read our reasons for Aston Villa vs Tottenham prediction and betting tips.
Aston Villa have won only one of their last six league matches (D2, L3) and they'll be disappointed to have thrown away a late lead at Newcastle last week (1-1) A run of three wins in 10 at Villa Park makes for grim reading for the Villans. However, Villa will be looking to heap more misery on Mourinho this weekend, knowing that a victory will keep alive their hopes of qualifying for European football next season. On the other hand, the pressure is mounting on Tottenham following their shock elimination from the Europa League after suffering one of the worst results in their history by going down 3-2 on aggregate to Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday. The Spurs are in 8th place, four points better off than ninth-placed Villa having played a game more than their next opponents and need to quickly respond at Villa Park.
Villa looked to have clinched victory at Newcastle last Friday when Ollie Watkins put them in front late on but a last-gasp equaliser from Jamaal Lascelles meant they had to settle for a point. Villa boss Dean Smith was again without playmaker Jack Grealish through illness and is frustrated at the failure to replicate the club’s early-season form. Their recent games have all been settled by fine margins and backing under 2.5 goals would have paid out in six of their last seven matches.
The Villa Park outfit have conceded just 28 goals in their 27 league outings, with centre-back pairing Tyrone Mings and Konsa playing a pivotal part in their impressive defensive record. Having that in mind, Villa could have been without the 23-year-old Englishman for several fixtures which doesn’t bode well for the last 9 games. Taking into consideration the dramatic improvement from last year, Villa fans have plenty to shout about. However, a growing concern at Villa Park is the side’s inability to salvage a result.
As for Tottenham, their hopes of a top-four finish suffered a setback on Sunday when they slipped to a 2-1 defeat in the north London derby against Arsenal. Erik Lamela’s stunning opener proved in vain as Martin Odegaard’s equaliser and an Alexandre Lacazette penalty completed Arsenal’s comeback, helped by Lamela’s red card. It ended a run of three straight wins which had all been against bottom-half opposition but Spurs have now lost their last seven games against teams currently in the top half.
Son Heung-min went off injured against Arsenal and will be badly missed if he remains unavailable while Lamela is suspended, backing up our view that this will be a low-scoring game. Tottenham are likely to be without Son due to his hamstring injury. Mourinho is likely to make several changes to his side with a number of them, including Harry Kane, playing 120 minutes on Thursday. Spurs would have fancied their chances of going all the way in Europe, but instead, their campaign now comes down to next month's EFL Cup final with Man City.

Aston Villa meet Tottenham having previously lost 11 of their last 12 matches against Hotspur in all competitions, winning the other in April 2015 under Tim Sherwood. Since a 1-2 defeat at Villa Park on New Year’s Day 2008, Spurs are unbeaten in nine away Premier League games against Aston Villa (W7 D2), winning the last five in a row.
Just when Tottenham had found some momentum with five wins in a row, they have suffered heartbreaks against Arsenal and Dinamo Zagreb to derail their campaign. Villa have hardly been flying themselves of late and we expect a low-scoring affair here.
BettingKick’s Aston Villa vs Tottenham prediction is: Under 2.5 goals
