Atalanta put in a magnificent performance to crush Midtjylland 4-0 in Denmark, but league loss against Sampdoria at the weekend showed the reasons for concern before Ajax visit to Gewiss stadium in Bergamo.
No matter they win or lose, Atalanta is the most entertaining team in European football. They have won four of their six competitive matches this season, losing the two matches in the league. In those matches, there were 31 goals in total with Atalanta scoring 19 and conceding 12. With the promise of high-scoring games, it is always a thrill to watch Gasperini's team. In their debut UCL season, Atalanta had a splendid debut reaching the quarter-finals before losing in the last moments to eventual finalists Paris Saint-Germain.
Duvan Zapata, Papu Gomez, Luis Muriel, and Aleksei Miranchuk were on target in Denmark in a game they controlled from start to finish, but after several changes in the team, they lost 3-1 at home vs Sampdoria. As their coach Gasperini stated, he experimented with the players that got few minutes in the new season and they were without their usual flow and rhythm. One of the reasons for the change could be heavy weather conditions in Denmark as the waterlogged pitch was a tougher opponent than Midtjylland players at times. Atalanta started in the Serie A with three wins and 13-5 aggregate but now they lost two games in a row and conceded seven goals.
Injured: Marco Carnesecchi, Pierluigi Gollini, Mattia Caldara
Atalanta (3-4-3): Marco Sportiello, Rafael Toloi, Jose Luis Palomino, Berat Djimsiti, Hans Hateboer, Marten de Roon, Remo Freuler, Robin Gosens, Mario Pasalic, Papu Gomez, Duvan Zapata
Ajax responded to their 1-0 loss to Liverpool on Matchday 1 with a 13-0 win over VVV over the weekend in Dutch Eredivisie, the biggest in the league history. They had 23 shots on target and the score could have been much worse for their opponents. Five goals from young Burkina Faso international Lassina Traore, braces from Dutch midfielder Jurgen Ekkelenkamp and veteran striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and goals from the captain and forward Dusan Tadic, Netherlands international Daley Blind, young Brazilian attacker Antony and Lisandro Martinez sealed the fantastic result for Erik ten Hag's men.
Ajax will certainly give that win for something from the match with Liverpool when they created several big chances but didn’t manage to score. On the other side of the pitch, they were unlucky because Liverpool got their win only through an own-goal scored from Ajax’s Argentinian international Tagliafico who converted Mane’s cross behind Onana. They are now under pressure to earn some points away after that home loss and playing against Atalanta in those circumstances isn’t good. They will look in the history books for positive vibes, as they remain unbeaten on the road in the Champions League since August 2016.
Injured: Mohammed Kudus
Ajax (4-3-3): Andre Onana, Noussair Mazraoui, Perr Schuurs, Daley Blind, Nicolas Tagliafico, Davy Klaassen, Ryan Gravenberch, Lisandro Martinez, David Neres, Dusan Tadic, Quincy Promes

Ajax scored a lot at the weekend but Atalanta is a team that wants to repeat the success in the UCL from the last season. Gasperini tried to refresh players and sacrificed league games because of the match with Ajax and there are reasons to believe that this could be a big home win with plenty of goals.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
