Atalanta hosts Cagliari in Coppa Italia after a big 4-1 win over Benevento on Saturday in the Serie A.
Gian Piero Gasperini proudly stated Atalanta ‘have got into this season now’ after hammering Benevento 4-1. La Dea has hit their form in 2021 with three consecutive victories, in which they scored 12 goals and conceded two. “We played a very good first half and then conceded a goal against the run of play, which can completely transform a game, my players kept their heads, didn’t change their attitude at all, and continued to push forward in winning the match. That is a great strength, maintaining that mentality.''
Without Papu Gomez in the starting XI, Atalanta has now notched up five wins and two draws. Josip Ilicic put on a masterclass, scoring a goal and having a hand in the other three. Ilicic was in the mood to entertain at the Stadio Vigorito and dribbled through the entire Benevento defense to net the opener, while nutmegging Kamil Glik. The Slovenian also rattled the woodwork with his left-foot curler, but Benevento got one back with Marco Sau sliding onto debutant Christian Pastina’s ball to the back post. Ilicic helped create the goals for Rafael Toloi and Duvan Zapata, then sparked the counter that saw Muriel place a stunner into the far top corner.
Atalanta reached their peak last season in February and March with the Champions League Round of 16 against Valencia and this could be a preview of what they could do in the upcoming months. They will be without Croatia international Mario Pasalic, who is nursing an injury. Other than that, there are no known issues and manager Gian Piero Gasperini is expected to have a fully-fit squad at his disposal.
Atalanta (3-4-1-2): Marco Sportiello, Mattia Caldara, Bosko Sutalo, Jose Luis Palomino, Joakim Maehle, Remo Freuler, Marten de Roon, Robin Gosens, Aleksei Miranchuk, Ruslan Malinovskyi, Luis Muriel
Eusebio Di Francesco conceded Cagliari ‘have every reason to be worried’ after a fourth consecutive defeat, but Fiorentina ‘was by no means superior.’ Bartlomiej Dragowski performed heroics, particularly on a Joao Pedro penalty, before Dusan Vlahovic sealed the victory for Fiorentina. Cagliari had the ideal opportunity to take the lead at the Stadio Franchi, but Joao Pedro’s spot-kick was too weak and Dragowski read it well. Jose Callejon turned back the clock with his assist swept across from the right for Vlahovic to come sliding in. Dragowski had to show cat-like reflexes to deny a double deflection late on and snatch the points for his team.
“When you come to Florence, miss a penalty, play with great temperament and run very few risks at the back, it’s very frustrating to leave empty-handed,” Di Francesco told media. After four consecutive defeats, Cagliari is now only two points clear of the relegation zone. He will be unable to call upon the services of young defender Andrea Carboni, who has tested positive for COVID-19. Former Napoli and Sevilla midfielder and Croatia international Marko Rog are out with a long-term injury. There are doubts over the availability of midfielder Paolo Farago and young Angola international Zito Luvumbo.
Cagliari (4-1-2-1-2): Alessio Cragno, Fabio Pisacane, Diego Godin, Sebastian Walukiewicz, Charalampos Lykogiannis, Christian Oliva, Riccardo Sottil, Razvan Marin, Radja Nainggolan, Giovanni Simeone, Joao Pedro

The two clubs last faced each other a few months ago in Serie A, with Atalanta beating Cagliari 5-2. Something like this could happen once again as Atalanta is in excellent form.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
