Once again phenomenal Atalanta BC welcome improving Genoa to the Gewiss Stadium on Sunday.
Gian Piero Gasperini warned Atalanta cannot keep being so wasteful after a 3-1 win over Cagliari. ‘If you don’t kill off the game, you risk starting all over again.’ La Dea dominated the Round of 16 tie with Cagliari, yet was denied repeatedly by goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, the woodwork, and their own finishing. These teams arrived in a very different form, as La Dea had won three on the bounce, while the Sardinians lost four in a row. “We’re in a good period of form, but if we can be more prolific, more clinical in front of goal, and finish games off earlier, it’ll be better. There are a lot of games this season, but we introduced players who haven’t had as much room and they did an excellent job. That allows me to widen the options and give everyone more guarantees going forward.”
Gian Piero Gasperini has most of his squad available, as he returns to a more familiar-looking XI after resting key players in the cup. Midfielder Mario Pasalic is the main doubt for Sunday's encounter, with tireless duo Hans Hateboer and Robin Gosens on the flanks and Marten de Roon and Remo Freuler occupying the center. Former Aston Villa stopper Pierluigi Gollini returns in goal and Duvan Zapata should do likewise in the attack, to the probable disappointment of his countryman Luis Muriel.
Atalanta (3-4-2-1): Pierluigi Gollini, Rafael Toloi, Cristian Romero, Jose Luis Palomino, Hans Hateboer, Marten de Roon, Remo Freuler, Robin Gosens, Matteo Pessina, Ruslan Malinovskyi, Duvan Zapata
Davide Ballardini believes Genoa can feel proud of the performance after pushing Juventus to extra time in the Coppa Italia. The Grifone fought back from 2-0 down and capitulated 3-2 in extra time to a Hamza Rafia strike. “Apart from the opening 20 minutes, when we were too timid, the team improved in performance, pressing, got a real foothold in the game, so we keep the performance, even if the result ultimately didn’t go our way,” the coach told media. “We know that we have a group of very professional lads who work daily to improve. That performance was confirmation of their quality and mentality, so it sends a good signal.”
Genoa has brought in Kevin Strootman on loan from Olympique Marseille to strengthen the midfield options but the whole squad seems to have been revitalized since Ballardini took over from Rolando Maran. “When you are a coach, you bring your personality and ideas to the daily work in training. That is all you can do, realistically. I present myself, I have some clear ideas and they must help to get the best out of the players at my disposal.”
Luca Pellegrini and Goran Pandev are still struggling with thigh injuries for Genoa and their fitness will be evaluated before kickoff. After a big turnover of players for the Coppa Italia defeat to Juventus, goalkeeper Mattia Perin returns behind the defensive trio of Andrea Masiello, Ivan Radovanovic, and Domenico Criscito. In-form pair Mattia Destro and Eldor Shomurodov should reunite as the front two in Ballardini's 3-5-2 formation, as new midfield recruit Kevin Strootman awaits his debut from the bench.
Genoa (3-5-2): Mattia Perin, Mattia Bani, Ivan Radovanovic, Andrea Masiello, Davide Zappacosta, Valon Behrami, Milan Badelj, Miha Zajc, Domenico Criscito, Mattia Destro, Eldor Shomurodov

Atalanta is in brilliant form but they are still giving their rivals opportunities to keep matches tight. Both teams to score is a very good betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
