Atalanta takes on Lazio in another exciting encounter at the Atleti Azzurri d'Italia on Sunday.
Gian Piero Gasperini admitted Atalanta’s five-goal Coppa Italia thriller with Lazio was ‘spectacular’ and he expects a similar match when they meet again on Sunday. La Dea won the quarter-final 3-2 despite having Jose Luis Palomino sent off after just 57 minutes, at which point the result was 2-2. There could even have been a fourth, as Duvan Zapata’s penalty was saved by Pepe Reina, and Atalanta will face Napoli or Spezia in the semi-final. “It was fun, wasn’t it? A fascinating game, at times spectacular,” the coach told media.
Atalanta and Lazio will meet again in Bergamo for the Serie A fixture on Sunday afternoon. Are we to expect another five-goal thriller? “Serie A is a different competition, but these are the same teams. The mentality and structure remain the same, our games are always full of goals, with moments where one team or another takes control. This victory boosts our confidence going into that weekend match. We cared about this game, as did Lazio, and Serie A is a different tournament with more margin for error. Here, it’s in or out, so playing over half-an-hour down to 10 men was a struggle, but we’ll recover our energy for the weekend.”
Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini is expected to restore Duvan Zapata, Josip Ilicic, and Rafael Toloi to his starting XI, with Luis Muriel, Ruslan Malinovskyi, and Jose Luis Palomino dropping out. The Nerazzurri's potent wing-back combination of Robin Gosens (suspended) and Hans Hateboer (doubtful with a foot injury) will be broken up, so Joakim Maehle should continue to deputize on the right, with Matteo Ruggeri potentially coming in on the left.
Atalanta: Gollini; Toloi, Romero, Djimsiti; Maehle, De Roon, Freuler, Ruggeri; Pessina; Ilicic, Zapata
Lazio assistant manager Massimiliano Farris noted they ‘made several mistakes’ in the 3-2 Coppa Italia defeat to 10-man Atalanta. “We are disappointed, as we had a good game, fell behind, and turned it around to lead 2-1,” Simone Inzaghi’s assistant manager Farris told media. He gave the post-match interview, as Inzaghi had lost his voice. “Our biggest mistakes were not controlling the situation when we had the lead and not making the most of the extra man.” It was 2-2 when Jose Luis Palomino saw red, but Atalanta still restored their advantage with Aleksei Miranchuk.
Lazio doesn’t seem to have the same determination and energy as last season. “The Champions League took a lot of energy out of us and unfortunately those games were during the period when we didn’t have any squad rotation options available. We tried to honor the Coppa Italia in the best way, we fought hard to the last minute. There were undeniably some mistakes, but we gave it our all.”
Lazio's Luis Alberto has resumed training after recovering from appendicitis and could be recalled to the starting XI if passed fit in time, otherwise Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro would continue in the central three of Simone Inzaghi's 3-5-2 formation. Felipe Caicedo is still struggling with a heel problem and top scorer Ciro Immobile is unable to train consistently due to an ongoing ankle injury. Both forwards have been playing with the aid of pain-killing injections, but Immobile will continue in attack alongside Joaquin Correa - midweek goalscorer Vedat Muriqi returns to the bench.
Lazio: Reina; Patric, Acerbi, Radu; Lazzari, Milinkovic-Savic, Leiva, Akpa Akpro, Marusic; Correa, Immobile

As Gasperini stated, these teams are ready for spectacular football, open-minded about attacking and another goal-fest is expected. Both teams to score is almost a sure bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
