Atalanta had the week off ahead of the match against Napoli, who arrive wounded after another setback against Granada in Europe. Read our reasons for Atalanta vs Napoli prediction and betting tips.
The Orobici had no commitments in Europe this week, as they face Real Madrid after the match against the Partenopei, who arrives from a 2-0 defeat to Granada in the Europa League. The two teams are tied at 40 points, joint with Lazio at seventh, and two points behind Juventus at fourth. Atalanta arrive fresh from a 1-0 win over the Rossoblu in Serie A and confident after the 3-1 win over Napoli in the Coppa Italia on February 10. Hans Hateboer will be absent for more than a month and Joakim Maehle should continue at right, but Gian Piero Gasperini still has a full squad to pick from.
Atalanta coach won’t commit to starting Luis Muriel more regularly after the winner against Cagliari, but the team from Bergamo can start preparing for Real Madrid now. It was a close game in Sardinia, as Muriel came off the bench to score the winner, then in stoppages, a penalty was awarded to Cagliari, only to be revoked via VAR. “Without Muriel, and the penalty, these are incidents that change a game. Fortunately, we had VAR and it was able to see it,” Gasperini told media. “This was a complicated game, as Cagliari is well-organized, very physical, and aggressive. We created many chances in the second half, hit the woodwork, and pretty much remained in their half, but you need the extraordinary moment from Muriel, otherwise, it’s difficult to win.”
The Champions League Round of 16 is coming up in the next few days against Real Madrid, while the Coppa Italia Final will be with Juventus. “We’ve got Napoli on Sunday and Real Madrid on Wednesday. So far, we haven’t had time to think about the Champions League, as they were all Coppa Italia knockouts. We’ve seen Real Madrid play, we know they have extraordinary players with technique and pace, regardless of that period of poor form. It’s a very prestigious fixture for Atalanta. We can’t try to win the Champions League, but we can learn from the experience and take that with us to Serie A. The important thing for us is to keep growing. The club made great investments, our finances are very positive in a world where clubs are full of debt, so I don’t know what more we could aim for. We dropped a few points in Serie A this season, but so did everyone. When we lost to Spezia, people tore us to shreds, but Spezia play really good football and Milan realized that last night too. We can only try to do our best.”
Atalanta (3-4-1-2): Gollini; Toloi, Romero, Palomino; Maehle, De Roon, Pessina, Gosens; Malinovskyi; Ilicic, Zapata

Gennaro Gattuso revealed even more injury problems after Napoli’s 2-0 Europa League defeat to Granada. ‘What’s the point of qualifying if we don’t have anyone who can play?’ The Partenopei were always facing an uphill struggle with just 12 senior outfield players available, between big Serie A games against Juventus and Atalanta, with no squad rotation possible. They were beaten 2-0 by a pair of goals in the space of two minutes, as Kenedy first created one with his cross for Yangel Herrera’s header, then scored with an angled drive. The second leg at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona next Thursday will need something spectacular to turn this around. “We need to be more precise. We created chances and certainly deserved more. There’s no point talking about qualification or not now, as the priority is to get players back,” Gattuso told media. “We just lost Matteo Politano as well, so what’s the point of qualifying for the next round if we don’t have anyone who can play? All we can do is count who is left and then see. We’re missing 10-11 players now, as Politano has problems with his ribs and can’t breathe properly. We can’t sit here and cry over it, we just need to find solutions.”
Nonetheless, Gattuso refused to accept the absences as an alibi. “There’s no fate or destiny in football, there are mistakes. We made mistakes and were dumb when conceding those goals, so paid a heavy price.” Victor Osimhen is still struggling to make any kind of impact, while Lorenzo Insigne was visibly limping during the game. “As I already said, Osimhen was out for a long time, he’s still playing with strapping to his shoulder and is not 100 percent. He needs to find consistency and sharpness to play his game. At the moment, he has these gaps and isn’t capable of moving consistently, as we’ve seen in the statistics. I think this team came here and did the maximum it was capable of at this moment in time.”
Napoli (4-3-3): Meret; Di Lorenzo, Rrahmani, Koulibaly, Mario Rui; Fabian Ruiz, Bakayoko, Zielinski; Elmas, Osimhen, Insigne
Suspended: none
Injured: Mertens, Ospina, Manolas, Demme, Lozano, Petagna, Politano

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
