The quarter-final game of the Champions League between Atalanta and PSG kicks off in Lisbon at Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica (da Luz) on Wednesday, opening the new format Final Eight tournament set entirely in Portugal.
When you are trying to explain Atalanta’s rise to the top of the table in Serie A and Champions League, the main things have to be team spirit and unity. Their extraordinary ascent, from battling relegation in 2016 to their first-ever Champions League campaign resulting in a quarter-final appearance is a story that needs to be in a movie.
Atalanta were on third place in the table in this season in the Italian league, they had three losses at the start of the main group round but made a complete turnaround and now they have five matches without defeat in a row in the most elite football competition in the world. Atalanta comes into this clash after four straight UEFA Champions League victories, after drawing 1-1 with Man City in Milano, they were better than Dinamo Zagreb, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Valencia. They defeated a team from Spain two times in the previous round of the knockout phase with an overall 8-4 score and that only one part of the Atalanta goalscoring record in this season. Atalanta scored 98 goals in 38 matches in Serie A and that was for 17 goals better than second-placed Inter in that category.
Atalanta has some advantages against PSG and the first one must be match fitness because in Italy the season resumed and came to a conclusion, and that was not the case in France. Apart from the two Cup Finals, PSG hasn’t played in four or five months.
The second advantage is better team play. PSG has many top players who can decide a game with a single individual move, but as a team, Atalanta has more players with the ability to run in both directions and cover every inch of the pitch.
The team from Bergamo has a unique style of football, which is both hard work and risky at the same time because of high pressing but they also very capable of playing with the ball, and able to put it on the net.
Atalanta will be without two starters, attacking midfielder Josip Ilicic who suffers from depression, and goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini who will be out for two months with injury.
PSG won all trophies in France. They were very dominant in the Ligue 1 that ended prematurely in March and after the restart of the season, they won two Cup finals vs Saint-Etienne and Lyonnais. In both matches they didn’t concede a goal, but also the scored only one vs Les Vertes. In the League Cup final vs Lyonnais, they won a trophy just after a goalless draw and penalty shoot-out so it is the right thing to say that Thomas Tuchel team is out of good scoring form before the Final Eight tournament in Lisbon.
Paris Saint-Germain has a bizarre crisis ahead of the Atalanta match. The injuries have been piling up for the Ligue 1 champions leading, with Kylian Mbappe, Marco Verratti, and Layvin Kurzawa in serious doubt. Also, Thomas Meunier is removed from the UEFA list entirely following his injury and transfer to Dortmund, Edinson Cavani has left the club and went to Benfica and Angel Di Maria is suspended for the next CL match. The strangest thing of all is that coach Thomas Tuchel was injured on Thursday training. He has suffered a sprained ankle and fractured his fifth metatarsal during a sport session.
Despite being at the same level in this competition it is clear that PSG has more individuals that can impact the game with their quality. That is reflected through the financial disparity. Brazilian Neymar has 36 million euros per season, the same amount of money received by the entire Atalanta squad during the year. Iličić, Gómez, and Zapata are most paid, with a salary of 1.2 million euros plus bonuses per season.

Key for this matchup could be Kylian Mbappe who trained with the ball for the first time after injury in the Saint-Ettienne game three days before the Atalanta game. If he can be fit enough to play than PSG has more chances to overcome the Italian side. Without Mbappe on the pitch team from Bergamo has an advantage. The best bet for this game must be on Atalanta as an underdog. Zapata to score is also a bet that you can’t avoid.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
