Atalanta looks like they are finally ready to take a leap into CL places and Parma will have a tough task to stop Gasperini’s team on Wednesday.
Gian Piero Gasperini said Atalanta is ‘hard to overcome’ when they are playing at their standard level as La Dea trashed Sassuolo 5-1 at the Gewiss Stadium on Sunday. Atalanta is one of the teams that you must watch if you love football but in this season they lost their usual balance and changed and rotated frequently. In November they struggled to maintain a certain level of play then tried different solutions that escalated with Gasperini - Papu Gomez confrontations in the dressing room. Argentinian is out of the team and waiting for the transfer and Atalanta moved on with a big win.
The main man in the last match was forward Duvan Zapata who scored a brace and praised team performance. Zapata, who joined Atalanta from Sampdoria in July 2018, has scored five goals in 14 Serie A games this term, his 53 in 101 competitive matches for La Dea. The 29-year-old admitted after the match that he was close to joining Sassuolo when he first arrived in Italy, before his stint at Napoli.
Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini could be without the services of Croatian midfielder Mario Pasalic, who is nursing an injury. Centre-back Cristian Romero is suspended for this match due to an accumulation of yellow cards.
Atalanta (3-4-1-2): Pierluigi Gollini, Berat Djimsiti, Jose Luis Palomino, Matteo Ruggeri, Hans Hateboer, Remo Freuler, Marten de Roon, Robin Gosens, Ruslan Malinkovskyi, Josip Ilicic, Duvan Zapata
Parma is reportedly giving Fabio Liverani a chance to convince against Atalanta on Wednesday, as the coach oversees last training. The former Lecce coach, who was brought in to replace Roberto D’Aversa last summer, has struggled to turn things around and the winless streak was stretched to six games after a 3-0 loss at home against Torino. Media reported the coach was being evaluated and that the Gialloblu considered recalling Roberto D’Aversa, who is still contractually tied to the Crociati. His future could depend on the performance against La Dea, because Parma is 16th in Serie A after 15 games, one point above relegation, and face Atalanta and Lazio in this week’s two fixtures, before a trip to Sassuolo on January 17.
Parma will be without Ivory Coast international attacker Gervinho, midfielder Alberto Grassi, and young midfielder Hans Nicolussi Caviglia. There are doubts over the availability of left-back Giuseppe Pezzella, midfielder Matteo Scozzarella and French full-back Vincent Laurini.
Parma (4-3-2-1): Luigi Sepe, Simone Iacoponi, Yordan Osorio, Bruno Alves, Riccardo Gagliolo, Jasmin Kurtic, Hernani, Juraj Kucka, Yann Karamoh, Juan Brunetta, Andreas Cornelius

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
