The unstoppable Atalanta side has got problems scoring over the past week and they host a Torino side still unbeaten under Davide Nicola.
La Dea started 2021 in exceptional form, but a 3-1 home defeat to Lazio and 0-0 Coppa Italia semi-final draw away to Napoli put a dampener on proceedings. Squad rotation will be inevitable ahead of Wednesday’s second leg against the Partenopei, with Hans Hateboer and Bosko Sutalo still injured. Gian Piero Gasperini ‘did not expect’ Napoli to change their tactics for Atalanta and explains why he made certain choices in the Coppa Italia semi-final. The first leg ended 0-0 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, but La Dea had the best scoring opportunities, forcing saves from David Ospina and missing a great chance with Rafael Toloi. “It was a good performance. Napoli is a quality squad, and we had most of the chances in the first half, while the tempo of the game was a little choppy in the second. We’re satisfied,” Gasperini told the media.
Gennaro Gattuso pulled a surprise by moving Napoli to a 3-4-3 formation from the start. “We saw at a certain point against Parma last week that Napoli moved to three at the back. I didn’t expect them to start that way tonight, I will admit that, but we adjusted well.” Gasperini also made some changes, for example leaving Josip Ilicic on the bench in favor of Colombian pair Duvan Zapata and Luis Muriel together. “It’s not easy for a player like him to always have the right approach. He did well coming off the bench today and will be a very valuable asset for the second leg. Muriel is in great shape and he proved that again tonight. We play every three days and have done basically since January 3. We need everyone and have to alternate them, as that’s how we’ve managed to be fairly consistent in our performances so far. “We had the chances today, the important thing of course is putting it in the net.”
Atalanta (3-4-1-2): Gollini; Toloi, Romero, Djimsiti; Maehle, De Roon, Freuler, Gosens; Pessina; Ilicic, Duvan Zapata
Suspended: None
Injured: Hateboer, Sutalo
Toro remains in the relegation zone, although there has been some timid improvement under new coach Nicola. He got a couple of draws with Benevento and Fiorentina, while Rolando Mandragora could get his Granata debut after a deadline day move from Udinese. Antonio Sanabria will have to wait, as he both has an outstanding ban and tested positive for COVID-19. Davide Nicola said Torino ‘can’t be satisfied’ with the 1-1 draw against nine-man Fiorentina. ‘There are things to improve and it’s a long way’. Torino picked up a point as Andrea Belotti equalized in the 88th minute, but had played with two more for 20 minutes, plus seven minutes of stoppages, on a dramatic night in Serie A Week 20.
Referee Marco Di Bello was the protagonist and had a busy night, handing cards all over, on and off the pitch. Nicola claimed the match ‘was broken up’ and that the Granata struggled to find their rhythm. “The game was broken up for a long time and we didn’t play anymore,” he said. “We didn’t win. We always try to win but we have to be lucid and aware, I have seen a performance from lads who have tried. We can’t be satisfied, there are things to improve and I have clearly said that it’s a long way. When you struggle to keep your head, it doesn’t go hand in hand with the body and you make mistakes.”
Torino (3-5-2): Sirigu; Bremer, Lyanco, Buongiorno; Singo, Mandragora, Rincon, Linetty, Ansaldi; Zaza, Belotti
Suspended: Sanabria
Injured: Sanabria, Vojvoda

The 7-0 result registered in January 2020 was both Atalanta’s biggest ever Serie A victory and Torino’s worst top-flight defeat. Atalanta should win this game, but they need to start finishing their chances in higher percentages. The home win is the most reasonable betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
