Augsburg could recall Ruben Vargas to the starting line-up for Friday's crunch clash with second-bottom Koln. Read our reasons for Augsburg vs Koln prediction and betting tips.
Vargas was a second-half substitute as Augsburg lost 2-0 to top-four candidates Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday. The result followed a goalless draw with lowly Arminia Bielefeld and 1-0 defeat to relegated Schalke and threatens to drag the Bavarian outfit into the relegation dogfight. With four rounds of fixtures remaining, Heiko Herrlich's side sits seven points clear of the bottom three. The absence of suspended defender Felix Uduokhai isn't ideal, but midfield pair Daniel Caligiuri and Rani Khedira are available for selection following mandatory bans of their own. Herrlich is also set to recall captain Jeffrey Gouweleew, left-back Iago, midfielder Tobias Strobl and forward Andre Hahn after shuffling his pack in midweek.
Die Fuggerstädter has avoided defeat in each of their last four home games, picking up two wins and two more draws most recently at the WWK Arena. Alfred Finnbogason - still in search of opening his 2020/21 account - has scored three times against Cologne, a return only Lukas Podolski can match in this game’s history.
Augsburg: Gikiewicz - Framberger, Oxford, Gouweleeuw (c), Iago - Strobl, Gruezo - Caligiuri, Richter, Vargas - Hahn
Out: Uduokhai (suspended)
Doubtful: Bazee (ill), Gregoritsch (cold), Khedira (knock), Pedersen (knock)
Coach: Heiko Herrlich
Speaking of outside-the-box thinking, Friedhelm Funkel's decision to move skipper Jonas Hector into attack midway through Koln's meeting with RB Leipzig proved a masterstroke. The veteran midfielder scored twice after the restart to reignite the Billy Goats' survival push. Koln ended a nine-game winless run with that 2-1 victory over Leipzig, their first win since claiming the Rhine derby away to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Matchday 20. They're now level on 26 points with 16th-placed Hertha Berlin and only four adrift of outright safety.
Funkel is expected to deploy a thoroughbred striker at the WWK-Arena in the form of fit-again Sweden international Sebastian Andersson, but Kingsley Ehizibue is suspended. Benno Schmitz should deputize at right-back, while Florian Kainz is in line to make only his third league start of an injury-hit campaign, ahead of Crystal Palace loanee Max Meyer.
Koln: T. Horn - Schmitz, Bornauw, Czichos, J.Horn - Skhiri, Hector (c) - Wolf, Duda, Kainz - Andersson
Out: Ehizibue (suspended), Jakobs (ankle)
Doubtful: Thielmann (muscular)
Coach: Friedhelm Funkel

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
