Augsburg will try to keep Mainz miserable when they host them on Saturday.
Daniel Caligiuri got a consolation goal for Augsburg in their 3-1 loss at Bayer Leverkusen last Monday, making it back-to-back defeats for Heiko Herrlich’s side after a strong start had produced seven points from their opening three games. They now host a Mainz side they’ve beaten in their last four competitive encounters at home but must do that without Alfred Finnbogason who’s been so clinical in those previous meetings. Finnbogason has hit the target six times in his last four games against Mainz.
The Icelandic striker is still sidelined with a thigh problem, meaning Florian Niederlechner and Michael Gregoritsch should continue in attack. Herrlich has had a settled team this season, with the only real question coming into the weekend whether it’s Vargas or Hahn who gets the nod, with the former having replaced the latter in Leverkusen before assisting that Caligiuri goal.
Augsburg has been awarded more penalties against Mainz (six) than they have against any other Bundesliga team, including three in their last three meetings. There has never been a 0-0 stalemate between these teams, while none of the last nine matches have ended in draws.
Augsburg: Gikiewicz - Framberger, Gouweleeuw (c), Uduokhai, Iago - Caligiuri, Khedira, Gruezo, Vargas - Gregoritsch, Niederlechner
Out: Finnbogason (thigh), Moravek (muscular)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Heiko Herrlich
While Augsburg is enjoying one of their best starts to a top-flight campaign, it’s been the exact opposite for Mainz. They remain the only team yet to put a point on the board after five games, having already dismissed coach Achim Beierlorzer after the 4-1 loss at home to VfB Stuttgart on Matchday 2. Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner has saved more shots (23) than any other goalkeeper this season.
This is the second time Mainz has started a Bundesliga season with five losses, also doing so under Jürgen Klopp in 2005/06. That year they got their first win at the sixth attempt. Key to Mainz’s chances in this season is striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who was involved in all four of the team’s league goals (three scored, one assisted), including a brace in the 3-2 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach last weekend, as well as a hat-trick in the DFB Cup first round. Mateta is Mainz’s most dangerous player this season: he has scored three of the team’s four league goals so far, providing an assist for the other.
Jan-Moritz Lichte has a fully fit squad to choose from, but captain Danny Latza is walking a tightrope. With four yellow cards to his name, he’s already one away from a suspension.
Mainz: Zentner - St. Juste, Kilian, Niakhate, Brosinski - Kunde, Latza (c) - Öztunali, Boetius, Quaison - Mateta

Coach: Jan-Moritz Lichte

Augsburg is in much better shape than Mainz and they are playing decent football, performances are even better than results. Mainz must dramatically improve before they can win some points and a home win is a reasonable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
