Ruben Vargas could hold the key for Augsburg against Schalke, who themselves are desperate for a big performance from Suat Serdar at the WWK Arena on Sunday.
Vargas is second to former Schalke midfielder Daniel Caligiuri for combined goals and assists at Augsburg so far this season. Caligiuri is Augsburg's four-goal top scorer this season. Across his previous 11 Bundesliga campaigns, the former Schalke midfielder has never scored so often after 10 matches. Heiko Herrlich's side is unbeaten in the three games in which the Switzerland international has found the net, but have only recorded two league wins across the campaign, with their most recent falling against Mainz on Matchday 6.
Since then, Augsburg has lost to Hertha Berlin and Hoffenheim, either side of draws with Borussia Mönchengladbach and Freiburg. Vargas and Caligiuri shouldering goal-scoring responsibilities from midfield are down to fitness and form elsewhere in the team. Alfred Finnbogason continues to experience one injury setback after the other, last season's 13-goal leading marksman Florian Niederlechner hasn't fired in 10 league games, while Andre Hahn is sidelined. In more positive news, left-back Iago is expected to slot straight back into the team at the expense of Marek Suchy, after missing Monday's 3-1 loss to Hoffenheim with a knock.
Augsburg: Gikiewicz - Framberger, Gouweleeuw (c), Uduokhai, Iago - Caligiuri, Gruezo, Strobl, Vargas - Gregoritsch, Niederlechner
Out: Bazee (knee), Hahn (not included), Jensen (ankle), Moravek (thigh)
Doubtful: Finnbogason (ankle), Pedersen (muscular)
Coach: Heiko Herrlich
Augsburg's mini drought is great in comparison to visiting Schalke's winless run. The Royal Blues have not tasted victory in the Bundesliga in 26 matches dating back to January, and only have three points to show for their first 10 league assignments of the season. Schalke is closer to Tasmania Berlin's terrifying Bundesliga record for the longest streak without a win (31 matches, 1965/66). As well as being bottom of the standings - four points adrift of the relegation play-off spot - ex-Augsburg coach Manuel Baum's free-falling charges have the league's worst defense (31 goals conceded) and attack (six scored).
Midfielder Amine Harit could be recalled following an internal suspension, but defender Salif Sane and Eintracht Frankfurt-owned striker Goncalo Paciencia are unavailable. Michael Langer is set to continue in goal in the absence of Frederik Rönnow and Ralf Fährmann, while Germany international Serdar will hope to rediscover the kind of form that yielded a team-leading seven goals between September and January of the 2019/20 campaign.
Schalke: Langer - Thiaw, Kabak, Nastasic, Oczipka - Mascarell (c), Serdar - Skrzybski, Harit, Raman - Uth
Out: Bentaleb (not included), Ibisevic (not included), Paciencia (knee)
Doubtful: Kutucu (not included), Matondo (knee), Nastasic (not included), Rönnow (hamstring), Sane (knee)
Coach: Manuel Baum

Augsburg is winless in four for the first time under Herrlich (D2, L2) and Schalke is an ideal rival to break that bad streak. The home win is the most reliable betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
