2 - 1
Union Berlin's push towards European football in the continued absence of Max Kruse against Augsburg on Saturday.
Augsburg has made a less than ideal start to 2021 with three defeats in a row, the latest of which was a narrow 1-0 loss to league leaders Bayern Munich. Alfred Finnbogason missed a penalty for the first time in his Bundesliga career, which would have leveled the scores late in the second half, but now Die Fuggerstädter's attentions turn to face another team at the upper end of the table. Heiko Herrlich stuck with his three-man defense against Bayern and should do the same for the visit of Union.
It was Marco Richter who led the three-man attack, however, alongside Ruben Vargas and Andre Hahn. While the former pair should expect to keep their places, Hahn could be replaced by the more physical central presence of Finnbogason or Florian Niederlechner. Fredrik Jensen also made a welcome return from the bench in the defeat to Bayern in what was the 23-year-old Finn's first league outing since October 2020.
Augsburg: Gikiewicz - Oxford, Gouweleeuw (c), Uduokhai - Caligiuri, Strobl, Gruezo, Iago - Richter, Niederlechner, Vargas
Out: Civeja (knee), Framberger (hamstring), Moravek (thigh)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Heiko Herrlich
While Augsburg has struggled, Union had been flying before their six-match unbeaten run came to an end on Wednesday night at the hands of RB Leipzig. Emil Forsberg's strike was the difference between the sides at the Red Bull Arena, but Die Eisernen remain sixth in the table, and just one point off Borussia Dortmund in fourth before BVB play on Friday. All that seemed so unlikely when Max Kruse tore his thigh muscle in December, ruling him out for two months, but Taiwo Awoniyi has stepped up to soften the blow of his absence.
The Liverpool-owned Nigeria international has scored five in seven since Kruse's injury. Urs Fischer will be hoping to call upon Sheraldo Becker, who missed the trip to Leipzig in midweek with an ankle issue. He will almost certainly restore captain Christopher Trimmel to his starting XI. meanwhile. Bayern loanee Leon Dajaku came on for his Bundesliga debut in the second half and will be hoping to do the same at the WWK Arena.
Union: Luthe - Friedrich, Knoche, Schlotterbeck - Trimmel (c), Andrich, Prömel Lenz - Ingvartsen - Teuchert, Awoniyi
Out: Hübner (suspended), Kruse (thigh), Pohjanpalo (ankle), Ujah (knee)
Doubtful: Becker (ankle)
Coach: Urs Fischer

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
