Blackburn Rovers
2 - 1
Barnsley host Blackburn at the Oakwell Stadium (Barnsley ) in the 30th round of the Championship and the match kicks off at 7.45 pm (UK) on Wednesday, February 17. Read our reasons for Barnsley vs Blackburn prediction and betting tips.
Barnsley had seen Brentford's automatic promotion hopes ended the last time they the Tykes, who pulled off an unlikely escape from relegation with a 2-1 win on the final day of the last season. This time around, there is still time for the Bees to pick themselves up, but Barnsley have pulled off a stunning win, which could boost their remote play-off chances as they sit in 12th coming into the Blackburn match. As for the visitors, Blackburn have been blowing hot and cold recently and are coming into this match on the back of the two defeats - 1-0 defeat at QPR and 2-1 to Preston at home. Prior to that, the Rovers had strung two wins together for the first time in their last nine games. They are heading into this midweek’s match in 9th, hoping they could end up closer to the top-six and play-off berths.
The hosts have been in fine form this season under Valerien Ismael and are coming into this match on the back of a huge 2-0 win at title contenders Brentford. Barnsley have indeed improved vastly under the Frenchman, putting some distance between themselves and the relegation zone. The Tykes left behind their little purple patch in the Championship – they lost three in a row and could only come away with a goalless draw at struggling Nottingham prior to Sunday’s win.
Against Brentford, Barnsley had a task ahead to overturn a five-game winless league run and a 1-0 loss in the reverse fixture. Whilst the Tykes’ promotion hopes have faded, this win could hamper the Bees as it snatched their 21-game unbeaten run. However, more importantly for coach Ismael, Barnsley have scored two away goals after netting just two league goals in 2021 and being goalless in four of their last five league games.
Meanwhile, Blackburn, a name which has been quite big in the English footballing scene for the past two decades, find themselves in the 9th spot with 39 points from 28 games played – a not so great record considering their excellent start to the season. The Rovers might seem to be struggling at the moment with 4 wins in 12 Championship games, but have shown their defensive prowess in the last few rounds, having consistently held the games below 2.5 goals in most of them (9/9).
The goal drought, on the other hand, has coincided with their main man, Adam Armstrong’s poor form. His early season form was merely remarkable, plundering in an astonishing 14 goals in his first 14 league games. Since then goals have dried up, with just four goals in his last 13 fixtures, the last one being from the penalty spot on Friday. It proved insufficient on the night where the Rovers had no forward passes, were messing around in their own half, and played the wrong game really, especially in the first 45 minutes.

Barnsley meet Blackburn having won their last two home league matches against them, 2-0 in both 2016/17 and 2019/20, but Blackburn are looking to complete a league double over Barnsley for the first time since 2012/13, after winning 2-1 in the reverse fixture at Ewood Park on November 28.
Barnsley, have slowed down in the league after a good start. They performed well against Chelsea in the FA Cup, and after the win at Brentford, Valerien Ismael's pointed out to that match as a game-changer as his side looks keen to get back to winning ways in the league.
Meanwhile, Blackburn have been one of the Championship's most flowing and free-scoring teams this campaign, but though Rovers still have promising stats overall this season, their woes in front of goal that have emerged recently need addressing and a proper response.
