Barnsley host Chelsea at the Oakwell Stadium (Barnsley) in the fifth-round tie of the FA Cup and the match kicks off at 8 pm (UK) on Thursday, February 11.
BARNSLEY VS CHELSEA MATCH ANALYSIS
The hosts come into this game following a 1-0 win over Daniel Farke's Norwich last Saturday in the fourth round of the FA Cup and a 0-0 draw at Nottingham in the league. They are on a five-game winless streak (D2, L3) during which they’ve scored just two goals. As a result, they have fallen to 12th in the table and are now huge 9 points away from play-off berths. Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel has pulled the Blues out of a rut. Frenchman's Chelsea are unbeaten in four games, winning three, and have moved back in contention for the Premier League top-four. But this will be Tuchel’s first taste of FA Cup action, with Chelsea’s wins over Morecambe and Luton Town coming under Lampard.
These two sides have already met this season, with Chelsea beating Barnsley 6-0 at Stamford Bridge in the third round of the Carabao Cup. But a lot has changed since then, including both clubs’ managers. Just a few weeks after the defeat at Stamford Bridge, Gerhard Struber left Barnsley to take charge of New York Red Bulls. He was initially replaced by Adam Murray on an interim basis before Valerien Ismael took charge. And the Tykes have improved vastly under the Frenchman, putting some distance between themselves and the relegation zone.
The Tykes have been in fine form this season under Valerien Ismael but are coming into this match on the back of a little purple patch in the Championship – they lost three in a row and could only come away with a goalless draw at struggling Nottingham Forest. They did, however, win their FA Cup Round 3 and 4 matches against League Two side Tranmere (2-0) and Championship leaders Norwich (1-0). The Tykes will want a good performance here in order to get their campaign back on track.
Since the appointment of Thomas Tuchel, the Blues have won three and drawn one of their fixtures, conceding just the solitary goal in their most recent outing, the weekend victory at Sheffield Utd. The German is no stranger to our own coach, as Tuchel and Ismaël went head-to-head when both were in charge of Dortmund and Wolfsburg respectively. Four years on and they meet again in football's oldest cup competition.
Of course, the Reds have already met Chelsea in a cup competition this term. That ended in a 6-0 hammering at Stamford Bridge under Gerhard Struber's watch, but in the FA Cup, history is on Barnsley's side. However, the new manager’s immediate task will be to improve the position of a club who are 5th in the Premier League after spending more than £220m in summer and a good run in the domestic cup can galvanize the side and help Tuchel win the fans over, as well.

Barnsley have reached the FA Cup fifth round for the first time since 2012/13, but have, interestingly, won both of their FA Cup meetings with Chelsea. The last time Barnsley faced Chelsea in the FA Cup, they knocked Avram Grant’s side out of the quarter-finals in 2007/08 with a 1-0 win at Oakwell.
On the other hand, Chelsea have been eliminated from just two of their last 54 FA Cup ties against sides from a lower division, going out to their Thursday’s hosts in 2007-08 and Bradford in 2014-15. However, they face a Blues side in good form, who have won four of their last five meetings with the Tykes in all competitions, including a 6-0 home win in the League Cup earlier this season.
