Barnsley and Luton open their respective Championship campaigns at Oakwell (Barnsley) on Saturday, 12 September, and the game kicks off at 3pm (UK).
After spending most of the 2020/2021 season under the drop line, in the bottom tree, Barnsley succeeded to miraculously escape the relegation on the final day of the campaign, a courtesy of a late winner from Clarke Oduor against Brentford, on one of the craziest Championship endings in recent memory. After restart they picked up two wins and a draw from their first three fixtures, and two consecutive wins at the end ensured survival. They will be hoping to build on that momentum for the new season.
Nathan Jones, the manager, and Luton seem like a perfect match. After angering the fans for leaving for Stoke, he returned in late spring to help the club stay up and he managed to do just that. The challenge in the new season for them will be to avoid such uncertainty in time, and to get going from the start, as they might not be so in luck this time around.
BARNSLEY VS LUTON MATCH ANALYSIS
Gerhard Struber's impact on the squad has been obvious since November 2019. His style is all about pressing high up the pitch and getting more on the ball, which suits Barnsley's young squad. The Austrian proved that he can work well with a limited budget, he has done well with the crop of players at his disposal and if they make a good start, they won't have to rely on miracles in the final weeks this season too.
The Tykes won 40 points in Struber's first 30 games, a return worthy of a mid-table team if not the play-off contenders, and the key thing this time will be to keep the defense as organized as was after the restart. In young goalkeeper Jack Walton, defensive stalwart Michael Sollbauer and creative left-back Clarke Oduor, they have good foundations to do just that, while Callum Styles, Elliot Simoes and Cauley Woodrow will try to make the best of it in the opponents' half of the pitch.
The Hatter's best quality is definitely having Jones as their manager. He made his teama team of believers, but they can't rely solely on their fighting spirit to get over the line this time. New additions will be needed as well, but as they do most of their shopping in the lower leagues, they may settle not for the most talented young players, but for the ones that suit them best. Adding Tom Lockyer and giving a permanent deal to James Bree are examples of such shrewd transfer business.
Last season, Luton managed to avoid relegation despite conceding 80 + goals and if this time they can have more good days than bad ones, they shouldn't worry about survival. Of course, they will again be one of the most likely relegation candidates, and will be glad to finish anywhere from 21st and above.

Over the last decade, they have had only three head-to-head matches, where they both have a win and a single draw. Luton has a 73% losing record while away in the last 19 games, and Barnsley have a 25% winning rate at home. We can expect a tight contention, where each team can be only marginally better.
